  • The winner of the 1997 Economics Nobel Prize is scheduled to be announced at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm.

  • The Franco-German economic summit is expected to take place in Muenster, Germany.

  • Sir Paul McCartney's symphony, "Standing Stone," is scheduled to premiere at Albert Hall in London.

  • On Friday, October 17, Sao Paulo, Brazil's, 21st International Film Exhibition is scheduled to begin with over 150 films to be screened.

  • In 1066, the Battle of Hastings was fought on Senlac Hill, seven miles from Hastings, where King Harold of England was defeated and killed by William of Normandy's troops.

  • In 1322, Robert the Bruce of Scotland heavily defeated King Edward II of England at Byland, north of York. Edward was thus forced to accept the independence of Scotland.

  • In 1705, the English navy captured Barcelona in the War of the Spanish Succession.

  • In 1806, Napoleon defeated the Prussians and Saxons at the battles of Jena and Auerstadt in Saxony. He completed his conquest of Prussia within six weeks.

  • In 1809, the Treaty of Vienna was signed, Austria ceded Trieste and Illyria to France, Galicia to Poland and Russia and Inn District to Bavaria.

  • In 1912, U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt was shot by a would-be assassin in Milwaukee. He was saved by his thick coat and a bundle of manuscript paper in his breast pocket.

  • In 1913, Britain's worst mining disaster occurred as the result of an explosion at the Universal Colliery in Glamorgan, Wales, killing 439.

  • In 1933, Nazi Germany announced that it would withdraw from the League of Nations and would take no further part in the Geneva Disarmament Conference.

  • In 1939, the British Navy battleship "Royal Oak" was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine in Scapa Flow Bay, North Scotland, with the loss of over 800 lives.

  • In 1944, British and Greek troops liberated Athens which had been in German hands since April 1941.

  • In 1947, flying in an army rocket-powered research plane, U.S. Air Force Captain Charles Yeager became the first man to break the sound barrier.

  • In 1964, U.S. black civil rights leader Martin Luther King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

  • In 1973, the Thai government of Prime Minister Thanom Kittikachorn was forced to resign after the army refused to use force to disperse student protesters.

  • In 1988, Naguib Mahfouz, an Egyptian novelist ranked by critics alongside literary giants such as Dickens, Zola and Dostoyevsky, became the first Arabic-language writer to win the Nobel literature prize.

  • In 1991, Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, held under house arrest for more than two years by her country's military rulers, won the Nobel Peace Prize.

  • In 1994, Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and Palestine Liberation Organization chairman Yasser Arafat shared the Nobel Peace Prize.

  • In 1995, a judge ordered Italy's former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi to stand trial on corruption charges.
