  • President Clinton is scheduled to depart on a four-day trip to Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Bethlehem and Gaza City.

  • The House Judiciary Committee re-convenes impeachment proceedings at 9am to debate and vote on a charge that Bill Clinton abused his office as president.

  • House Speaker Newt Gingrich is scheduled to hold a farewell town-hall meeting in Marietta, Georgia.

  • On Sunday, December 13, Defense Secretary William Cohen is scheduled to leave for Germany, where he will meet with the Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder. He will also go to Brussels for the NATO defense ministers meeting.

  • On Monday, December 14, President Clinton is scheduled to travel to Gaza City. His tentative schedule includes a meeting with Yasser Arafat and an address to the Palestinian people.

  • On Tuesday, December 15, President Clinton is tentatively scheduled to visit the grave of late Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, view the Old City, and travel to Bethlehem.

  • On Wednesday, December 16, the formal sentencing of teen-ager Michael Carneal, who pleaded guilty in the December 1997 shootings at Heath High School, takes place in Paducah, Kentucky. He's expected to be sentenced to at least 25 years in prison.

  • On Thursday, December 17, the 56th annual Golden Globes nominations are scheduled to be held in Beverly Hills, California.

  • In 1787, Pennsylvania became the second state of the United States.

  • In 1792, Ludwig van Beethoven, aged 22 and newly arrived in Vienna, noted in his diary he had 15 ducats -- enough for his first music lesson with Franz Joseph Haydn.

  • In 1805, U.S. transport pioneer Henry Wells was born; one of the founders of the American Express Company, he teamed up with William Fargo to form the Wells Fargo Company.

  • In 1863, Norwegian painter Edvard Munch was born. His most characteristic work is the "The Scream," in which an anonymous figure on a bridge clasps his hands to his ears.

  • In 1896, Guglielmo Marconi gave the first public demonstration of wireless communication in London. On the same day in 1901 he made the first transatlantic radio transmission from Cornwall to Newfoundland.

  • In 1915, the first all-metal plane flew for the first time. Built by German Hugo Junkers, it was known as the "Tin Donkey."

  • In 1936, Chinese leader Chiang Kai-shek declared war on Japan.

  • In 1939, actor Douglas Fairbanks senior died. Best remembered for his swashbuckling roles in silent films, he was also a co-founder of the United Artists Corporation.

  • In 1955, the United States closed its consulate in Hanoi following the end of the Indochina war and the partition of Vietnam.

  • In 1963, Kenya became an independent state within the Commonwealth with Jomo Kenyatta as prime minister; it became a republic on the same day the following year with Kenyatta as president.
