"The situation is absolutely disastrous," U.N. official Christopher Gunness told CNN on Sunday, as a second day of aerial attacks brought the death toll in Gaza close to 300. Hundreds more people have been injured.

Dr. Eyad El-Sarraj, a psychiatrist who runs Gaza's mental health program, says: "The children are terrified, adults are unable to provide them with security or warmth. Hospitals are stretched out of the limits. We need blood and medicine and surgical equipment."

Israel has said the airstrikes are a necessary self-defense measure after repeated rocket attacks from Gaza into southern Israel by Hamas militants. Israeli leaders say they are trying to minimize civilian casualties in Gaza.

“The children are terrified, adults are unable to provide them with security or warmth. Hospitals are stretched out of the limits. We need blood and medicine and surgical equipment.”

Exactly what goes on for 8 years in Sderot. But nobody cares about that, do they?

Solomon   December 28th, 2008 9:17 pm ET

UNRWA said that 8 children were killed in one of their offices by Israeli attacks and they need an explanation.

Beny. tell me how many people die in sederot in the 8 years.I know as usual you will not answer.

the fact is that Israel is targeting civilians and children just like they did in Lebanon.

Peaceman   December 28th, 2008 9:21 pm ET

How is the amount of people who died in sderot is relevent in anyway?
Are we doing a competition here?

Israel's goal is not to kill. The goal is to stop the ongoing missle launches against Israeli towns. It doesn't matter if these attacks cause death or not. They must be stopped at all cause.

Solomon   December 28th, 2008 9:37 pm ET

"Israel’s goal is not to kill."

how nice. Israel has killed and wounded 1000 humans today in less than 36 hours.

"How is the amount of people who died in sderot is relevent in anyway?
Are we doing a competition here?"

Peacema
well just to show that maybe one was killed in the last few years compared to hundreds of Palestinians in the same period and this sederot thing is a big lie.

it is nothing to do with sederot it is about breaking the will of the Palestinians to resist the occupation which will not happen.

Everyone cares about Israel. You have the backing of the US, you also have funding and military aid from the US. Innocent people are suffering. Humanity needs to be shown to the innocents of all sides

Karen   December 28th, 2008 11:14 pm ET

I feel very sorry for the people of Palestine. But they let hamas take over. They should have risen up and refused, and resisted. They did not because of the murderous hamas itself. They instill fear. Unfortunately, hamas is fed by Iran and Syria. It's a non-stoppable fuel and they are willing and able to sacrifice the people in Palestine. This is the continuous ring-around-the-rosy that continues in this region. It's a cultural fundamentalist bent that will never go away until the arab countries start to take themselves over. Starting with Saudi Arabia! Those cowards.
People will continue to die on both sides but mostly Palestinians because the Israelis are superior in firing power, common sense and intelligence.

Hamas took a knife to a Gun fight – the true crime is committed by those who sold them inferior weapons.

hamas is attacking with missiles for 8 years. they wanted war - they got war!
we should not apologize that we are stronger than them.

jake   December 29th, 2008 2:43 am ET

it doesnt matter how many people were killed in each side.

one side is a western civilization of the 21 century.
the other side are crazy fascist muslims of the 15 century.

israel is the right side.

when hitler (wich share a very similar ideology to hamas) launched missiles at england no one asked england to be proportionate or to target only nazi troops.

you start a war, you cant complain!

Dan   December 29th, 2008 2:54 am ET

The muslims cannot live in peace anywhere in the world. They cannot even live in peace with their own people, Iraq, Afganistan, Pakistan, just to name a few. Islam is a religion of death, they even said it themselves. One of their terrorists leader once said that muslims love death while the rest of the world loves life. How will there ever be world peace when you hear this garbage comes out of them.
Hamas is a terror organization supported and backed by Iran and Syria. They used violence to gain control of Gaza and now their people are paying the price. Israel cannot sit still with their hands tied behind their backs and absorb Kassam rockets fired on civillian towns day in and day out, sometimes up to 70 in one day. Show me one country in the world will except this. I think seven years of putting up with it is enogh and now it is pay back time.

Solomon   December 29th, 2008 3:17 am ET

"because the Israelis are superior in firing power, common sense and intelligence".

you remind me of some Philosophy that was called Nazism. not Much different from the Zionist Philosophy.one thing I know that the first one is history the second one looks like it is following the foot step of the first.

Karen, whatever it is that your are smoking…stick it up you’re A – -

Solomon   December 29th, 2008 4:05 am ET

Karen
.is this your Idea of intelligence and common sense

Israel Shahak once remarked that for at least the last 200 years, Jews have demanded equal rights in every country in which they've lived – with the remarkable exception of Israel, the Jewish state.1 Israel has always founded its institutions on the denial of equality to non-Jews. From the beginning, a good half a century before 1948 when the state of Israel was established, Zionist ideology has held strict opposition to equality for non-Jews as a fundamental principle.

The principle of inequality for non-Jews requires, first of all, that the relevant population groups be defined. It is therefore not surprising that the dichotomy Jew/non-Jew cuts across nearly all the social, demographic, juridical and cultural institutions of Israeli life.

Karen
a society like this will not survive.

Dan   December 29th, 2008 4:07 am ET

Solomon, you need to read history more carefully and see who sided with the Nazies. The history books I have read all point to the muslims (the grand Mufti). The state of Israel did not even exist then. The muslim terrorist organization in Gaza, Lebanon, Iran, Syria and the rest of the muslim world is determind to wipe Israel off the map. Israel is not going anywhere. Israel will never die. Israel will live forever.

RJ in Washington   December 29th, 2008 4:42 am ET

At risk being labeled a simpleton I struggle to understand the basic conflict.

I see no resolution to this conflict until both sides become converts to their ideological beliefs.

It is one thing to give lip service and say “I am a Christian” or “I am a Jew”, but it is quite another thing to commit to these ideologies through your actions.

It is my understanding that the first law of both is: “Thou Shall Not Kill”.

Outraged Jew   December 29th, 2008 4:43 am ET

Beny,
It's the same old, same old. Poor Israelis, bad Palestinians. The Israelis have faces, the Palestinians do not. Israel gets billions, Palestinians starve.

I have MANY Israeli friends who are horrified by their government–wake up!!

Social Justice for ALL. Human Rights for ALL. These are Jewish values.

Control seems to be the Israeli government's value–not peace. Shame SHAME on these heartless warmongers. Seems the tactic is to just wipe out and blow up the problem. How inconvenient that it is humans you want to destroy.

Oh doesn't it anger the world, but here you go, you will do what you want and to heck with everyone else–just keep pouring those billions of dollars our way USA!!

Far more Palestinians have died than Israelis in this balagan (mess)!! 110 rockets vs. tons of bombs?? Overkill on the Israeli's part–gimme a break!!

Violence begets violence–yes on both sides and the violence needs to stop on BOTH sides, Beny. NO child–not one–should die on either side. Good grief!! It is two dysfunctional families victimizing their young for generations to come, and they want to drag the rest of the world down with them!

Are we gonna let that happen, world?? INSANE.

I am furious. Obama, please do not listen to Condi or Rahm on this one, go to the grassroots of the ME–it is the USA grassroots that got you where you are today, so tune into the world's grassroots, now, too.

Two State solution, and tear down that f*&^ing apartheid wall!!

Equality for ALL Israel/Palestine and the region

Eric   December 29th, 2008 4:46 am ET

What country would allow itself to be attacked by rockets on a regular basis and not defend herself or her citizens. Just imagine that the United States, or Russia or China was attacked – would it sit there take it, all while allowing a debate about allowing fuel, electricity and food to be delivered to enemy- an enemy with a stated goal of the destruction of the country. Me thinks not.

Israel need to think of how to stop the attacks and not worry about a "proportionate" response. Would France even allow itself to get hit by a neighbors rockets endlessly???

Debs   December 29th, 2008 5:06 am ET

Debs.

these are the words of Israel Sahak who served in the Israeli army and he was a holocaust surviver.

he also said in one of his books.

if the victim was Gentile and the murderer converts to Judaism, he is not punished."

Then Shahak gives us a rabbi's answer to an Israeli soldier who has asked whether or not it is proper to kill Arab women and children. In his answer the rabbi quotes from the Talmud: "The best of the Gentiles - kill him; the best of snakes - dash out its brains."

Ellen Marie   December 29th, 2008 6:13 am ET

Yes, it appears they must not stop the attack until every last person is dead. They have no souls and the US should just stop taking their side.

Preaches for world domination by Islamists
Kill Infidels
Glorifying death on current life for benefits on the next one
Firing and hiding between their own people

THE ANSWER IS N0-
THE MODERN WORLD SHOULD KEEP THE MORAL VALUES OF HUMAN RIGHTS

Beny   December 29th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

Ellen,

You call Israel cowards? Let me tell you something about cowards.

Cowards are people who shoot rockets at schools and from schools, knowing that we won't strike schools.

Cowards are people (and that's a compliment) that say they don't fear the Israeli retaliation, and then hide in their bunkers, leaving the Palestinians to pay for their crimes.

And finally, cowards are people who tell Israel to "show restraint", while ANY OTHER COUNTRY WOULD HAVE LONG TURNED GAZA INTO A SMOKING CRATER.

Those are cowards.

miriam   December 29th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

Every time Israel is attacked and wins she is accused of being the aggressor. In 1948, Five Arab armies were convinced of victory and the destruction of Israel and started a war. However they lost that war and have been determined to reverse that embarressment ever since. All attempts to attack Israel have been met by superior responses and as a result Arabs complain of Israeli agression. Why keep on trying? After 8 years of rocket fire into Israel reached intolerable levels last week and Israel still held back, Hamas taunted Israel saying that Israel was afraid to respond. Now Israel has responded why are so many people suprised? Those who truely understand the situation and don't blindly believe all the Arab propaganda realise that what is happening now was unavoidable. Even some Arab governments are finally seeing the situation as it is and not falling into the usual traps set by terrorist groups who claim to be fighting in the interests of their fellow Muslims. In wars people are killed, military and innocents. In this war, as in all others that Israel has been forced to fight, the protection of innocent civilians on both sides is a priority. Unfortunately, the enemy sees the killing of civilians as the priority. And you lot call Israel the terrorist? You've got it all wrong.

Beny   December 29th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

Israel is ceasing its airstrikes, and calling up infantry forces (Givati, Golani and Kfir) to enter Gaza on foot and assault terrorist bases.

WHY ARE WE DOING THAT?

Israel can easily flatten Gaza into a pile of rubble, and that will indeed accomplish our objective: DESTRUCTION OF HAMAS'S MILITARY ABILITIES. Not a single soldier sent, we can end this here and now.

The problem, as you've already guessed, is that many civilian (not entirely innocent, but not Hamas either) Gazans will be killed in this airstrike. Unless you're Hamas, of course, and then you don't see the problem with civilians being killed. Despite the fact the EVERY OTHER COUNTRY WOULD HAVE DONE THAT BY NOW, Israel is somewhat saner.

Instead we are risking the lives of our own Israelis, in order to defeat Hamas with as few civilian casualties as possible.

THEY SHOOT FROM DENSE POPULATION, HOPING TO GET SOME BODIES TO FLAUNT IN FRONT OF THE WESTERN MEDIA. WE RISK OUR OWN MEN TO AVOID THIS. WHO ARE THE COWARDS HERE?

Beny   December 29th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

Miriam,

Your words are very very true. The problem is that you are writing in wall-style- just a big block of letters; those ignorami don't even bother looking at your comments because they see something long and, well, reading lessons were probably replaced by rocket-shooting workshops.

My suggestion? Divide into paragraphs. Use HTML tags and capital letters. split into two comments if necesary. Do like I do, because people here really need to listen to you and the wise words you say, and they just don't bother.

Good luck and thanks for your comments

Leo   December 29th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

Hamas placed their HQs all over the residential areas and use civilians as the shilds. This is the most inhuman act. This way they can use the civilian casualties politacally against Israel.
Israel has no chois, but take the civilian casualties in concideration. It is like if a surgeon have to cut a cancer-tumor – if it is too deep in the healthy tissue, some of that tissue will get cut off as well.

Nona   December 29th, 2008 5:27 pm ET

Hamas endlessly lobs rockets at Israel day after day after day in hopes of killing Israeli citizens, and Gaza's citizens applaud. The Palestinian help hide the rockets in their homes and businesses and schools, endangering their own children. But when Israel reacts to defend itself, these same Palestinians whine and cry like sniveling kindergarteners. Here's a tip for the Gazans: if you don't want a more powerful neighbor to react with all its force, don't shoot rockets at its citizens. It doesn't take the mind of a rocket scientist to figure it out.

Debs   December 29th, 2008 9:35 pm ET

Beny,

If ground forces go into Gaza, there will killing spree by BOTH sides, you know that. I know I repect your views and I do agree with some of what you say but this, it is going to explode into a ugly situation.

I know what Hamas is doing is wrong, but sending a major ground assualt will be just as bad as airstrikes.

Look sessibly at the consequences.

1. Israeli soldiers lives at risk.

2. Israeli soldiers kill civilians (accidentaly) it does happen

3. This will send the wrong message to Gazans (Israel is here as an occupation force) I am sorry beny but it is this time. Israel is lauching an Invasion. Thats occupation.

4. Hamas will send more rockets ans suicide bombers to kill innocent Israelis.

WHO WILL WIN THIS? No one. A new wave of killing by both sides will begin again.

Gilad   December 29th, 2008 11:43 pm ET

Solomon,

It is quite a known fact that the Hamas have been and still do use innocent civilians as their human shields in order to cause anti-Israeli reaction in the world-wide media.

Deception has always been widely used in Hamas' actions to affect the world's opinion on Israeli actions. One example for this would be a fake Hamas funeral from two-three years ago (can't recall exactly) where a man who supposedly died from an Israeli Air-Force attack was being lead in his casket, where in the middle of the so-called funeral he suddenly jumped out of it and ran away. One can only estimate how many more of these have been documented.

Also, what do you say about the fact that three days ago, before the Israeli attack had begun, Hamas had shot missiles aimed at Israeli towns for the purpose of killing innocent civilians, however, not properly aimed, the missiles had fallen on a Palestinian village killing one teenage girl and severely injuring another.

Now, you may ask yourself - what happened to the second injured girl?
– She is now being taken care of in a hospital inside Israel, after her life had been saved by Israeli doctors who took care of her after the missile hit.

Also, it seems as if too many news sites forget to mention the fact that only today Israel had sent a hundred trucks with humanitarian and health-care supplies into Gaza. You may say this is not enough - but can you see any other country sending humanitary supplies to populations saturated with people who seek to destroy it? I certainly do not.

I did not see the government in Sudan launch any supplies to the victims of rape, murder and whatever other abominations had happened in Darfur.

I did not see any help given to the Armanians when they were slaughtered.

Do you?

I posted this elsewhere and will post here, too. I would love to hear responses!

It’s basic folks, Brains not brawn.

An alternative to violence? Is there one? Can you all really afford to continue the insanity?

Jews, Muslims, Israelis, Palestinians are here to stay, can you all live with that fact?

Can you, Beny and Solomon accept the fact that neither of you is going to leave? You, your kids and grandkids are here to stay–do you really think wiping each other out is the solution??

What good will it do your respective families if you both end up dead with the blood of the "other" on your hands?

Everyone on all sides here, what really do you think will be the long term outcome here? Isolation for Israel, annihilation of a people?

Will this REALLY be a resolution for your kids?? A final solution, perhaps, but the one you really wish for your descendants?

miriam   December 30th, 2008 8:59 am ET

OJ, no Israeli believes in wiping anyone out. They are prepared to live peacefully with Arab neighbours and in many places indeed do.

Only one side is looking to annihilate the other, something that has been their aim since before there was any sovereign state, Jewish or Arab, in the Middle East.

Beny, thanks for your advice!

Ann Rychlenski   December 30th, 2008 5:06 pm ET

The situation in Gaza is the fault of no one but Hamas and the Arab world that exploits the situation in order to stir the pot of Islamo-fascism. The Palestinians wanted Gaza – they got it – then they elect a terrorist organization to run their government. Why are they surprised that their people are starving and in danger? Terrorists do not care about anything or anyone other than their own twisted agenda – Hamas will never provide food, shelter or security to the people of Gaza as long as they can spend their time, money and energy on weapons and violence. It is not the responsibility of Israel to provide humanitarian aid to people who wish them nothing but death and destruction. The Palestinians need to take a long hard look at themselves – and they can start with the indoctrination of their children to become living bombs – these are the only people on the planet that actually encourage their own children to commit suicide – talk about sickness in the soul! No one can cure them but themselves.

can see the jewish zionist “intellectuals” are trying to occupy and control the internet as usual…something they are good at-occupation. Eh, after you guys destroyed the beautiful country of Lebanon (again) ,were you exhausted?,I mean it takes a lot of effort occupying and killing the Palestinians at the same time. It is also so inspiring that you can send so many noble professors to teach around the globe and “educate” us other people.
It must be hard controlling the extreme water pressure when you fill your swimming pools. Just relax, go have a coffee and pizza , oh I forgot again, silly unsensitive me……you may have a big fire cracker zoom overhead or have a suicide bomber blow himself up on his own land. These people are so cowardly eh!…better fire up your New York Jet Fighters and big bulldozers, you poor guys…and then there is Iran, wow, thank God you have nukes eh…Those people, boy oh boy…better bomb their infastructure back into the stone age soon like Bush did to the Iraq. And Syria, those people, boy oh boy, you are surrounded by hostile sick people with funny cultures. These people, do they have brains and do they have women and children too?? Wow, how do you do it surrounded by all this also, how did you become such a respectable people over the last 60 years since your glorious becoming… your such victims. Sorry to take up a few moments of your time, I realize how much constant daily effort it takes to control these rebelious Palestinians. We have prisoners misbehave in our prisons in Canada also from time to time, at least you give your 1.5 million open air sometimes. Your so thoughtful. You wonder how stupid everybody is and barbaric, boy, they are all animals, don’t they realize they should not keep their integrity and dignity or maybe some family members?, or thell get killed! …… being the sophisticated society that you are…the pillar of democracy…the pillar of humanity, you would think that everybody would learn by now. Better kill some more to teach them a lesson to show them you should not resist such a great people who have not changed for the last sixty years..
My Wife and I would like to give our respect and sympathy to the Palestinian people who have suffered beyond measure the last 60 years and counting. We are sorry that our Harper conservative prime minister(natural right wing neo conservative republican ideology) has sanctioned the Palestinians on behalf of sleeping Canadians for the first time in Canadian history. But 80 percent of the people did not vote, did not show up and vote for him..it was a major record low, he is a minority. On the other hand we can only hope that Obama will stop being so naive and such a good talker at the same time,. We respect Obama. In fact, we were so so excited, feeling there will actually be change. Darfur, Africa in general etc. needs USA, and Palestine is long overdue. Pakistan should stop being secretly bombed left and right and China has more class and taken more shit then rebublican politics care to admit. Vietnam should be given major compensation for agent orange, no matter what some judge says..we can go on and on…your soldiers should not be thrown in disrespectful wars, like Iraq and the Afgha….help them instead by getting soldiers to build schools instead of breaking down doors and home invasions(good soldiers follow orders but do not like to do shit that isn’t right)…stop sanctioning the Cuban people also(over 60 years)
It will take a noble strong man to do the right thing and bring peace and justice to the world…..I am afraid Obama may be all talk, there are early indications of powerful lobby zionist ignorance persuading and lying to him full time(especially by some of the choices he has picked and by Biden who is a good man but not a good humanitarian). Its such a shame and disappointment to all humanitarians and silent majority around the world.. Obama is such a smart decent man who should know better. But lets hope together and hope the American people will get their country back, they deserve it and so do all the decent silent Jewish people who are afraid to speak because of the stereo types imposed on them ….because of the mentality and actions of many of their own people. They are afraid and persecuted also by these majority zionists…. calling decent Jewish people self hating Jews…sure , and they think USA is United States of Israel.

dan perman   December 30th, 2008 8:39 pm ET

debs,

consider this:

many claim that “Israel is targeting civilians”

which means to say that “one of the most powerful armies in the world” has been bombing Gaza for days, deploying massive air power, dropping hundreds of bombs, and ultimately killing a grand total of 50 civilians or so in the “most crowded place on earth?”

There are two options here: A) The Israeli army is not targeting civilians, or B) Israeli pilots suck.

I tend to go with option A.

Somebody needs to stop israel and sone.If israel says jump the US and all others say how high.True if someone was shooting rockets across into the US we would go afther them but we would not fly jets over and drop bombs on just any group of people throwing rocks. When israel bombed the HELL out of lebanon nobody had the Balls to stop israel then and dont have them now.The US wont say anything cause israel is the only ones that have the money to buy the jets and bombs to fight the people throwing the rocks.Out of the 380 some men wemen and little kids and the some 1000 wounded most of the blood in the streets belong to the USA!!!!!!

very pissed   December 31st, 2008 4:29 pm ET

I would also like to add I swear I hate to see anyone get killed mainly the children but enough is enough with everything that israel has bought from the US they can tell were most the rockets came from in Gaza and to go in there and bomb everything and to kill as many people as they have and to also ram boats with food and med. supplies is just WRONG!!!!!

Where was everybody when these so called Hamas was launching rockets into Israel ? Nobody checked them or warned them about their actions. Even the Arab world .They make Hamas feel too comfortable with their actions as if Israel is not a sovreign country .Israel warned severally of the consequence of this action .Now that Israel is protecting his people and borders. Is there any justification for Israel to stop the campagne now ? NO ! Let the world speak to the Hamas first…..Anyway , who knows ….Hamas might regard these loss of their people as helping them to get to heaven by thier death….Since the basis for suicide bombing is on this premise.Hamas is on a suicidal head-on with Israel.Israel must increase the bombing.

Debs   January 1st, 2009 11:22 pm ET

Dan,

I know that their are people who deliberately spread lies and cause trouble whe it comes to Israel. Israel is indeed in a dificult situation. Hamas are sending even more rockets into Israel now that the airstrikes took place.

I was worried that this would transpire. All that has happened is that along with hamas fighters, civilians have been killed. Reciprocating violence with violence will always makes things worse.

Like I have said before Israel has the right to defend herself, but not like this...I cannot condone these actions. When will both sides realise that life is far too precious for all of this fighting??

Shalom

Chamas will not even recognize Israel, let alone commit to the ending of firing the rockets into Israel. Why should Israel consider anything less than a complete neutralization of an enemy . You have never seen an Israeli blowing himself up in a restaurant. the only reason for isolating the Gaza area is to restrict their ability to send human bombs in to Israel. So they resort to rockets; And Israel is trying to stop that too. The people of Gaza voted for the Chams. IF you choose to sleep with dogs don't be surprised if you wake up with fleas.
