obama

So far, no public statement from U.S. President-elect Barack Obama on the Gaza situation, but we are hearing from aides that he has spoken to American Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in an eight-minute phone call.

"The president-elect appreciated the call and the information from Secretary Rice," one aide said, adding that Obama initiated the phone call. "He will continue to closely monitor these and other global events."

Barack Obama takes office January 20th.

What do you think an Obama administration needs to do to bring a resolution to the current conflict?

What Barak obama should do is.

(1) Demand that israel evacuate occupied Palestinian land.

(2) Inforce UN resolutions about Palestine.

(3) demand from all Arab countries to recognize Israel.

Problem solved.

Ziad Daher   December 28th, 2008 9:57 pm ET

President elect Obama won the race to the White House on a message of Change. It's time for the mold to be broken, a peaceful solution to a 50+ year problem will be beneficial for both sides be it Palestinian or Israeli and it will save the world alot of tension. Obama needs to prove that he has what it takes to be strong enough to quiet pro Zionist Lobbys and work for a just and fair solution. In the end we are all humans living in this world.

Debs   December 28th, 2008 11:30 pm ET

Ziad Daher,

Thank you for logical and well thouht comment.

Salam and Shalom

Solomon,

Im afraid that Barak may not be so empithatic to the Palestinians for their homeland. I am starting to have second thoughts about him being president..

Salam, goodnight. Lets hope this will be resolved soon and the killing will stop

Arooj Syed   December 28th, 2008 11:49 pm ET

I am just hoping that Barack Obama can muster up enough guts to find a fair & just solution to bring peace to the world in general and middle east in particular.

MARLA   December 29th, 2008 12:23 am ET

I AM FED UP TO MY EYE BALLS WITH ISRAEL. IT SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN PLOPPED DOWN IN THE MID EAST, IT BELONGS IN GERMANY WHERE THE HOLOCAUST OCCURED. WOULDN'T YOU THINK THAT WHAT HAD BEEN DONE TO THEM WOULD GIVE THEM MORE SYMPATHY TO THE PALESTINIANS...THEY OCCUPY, WALLED, SETTLED, WHOLESALE DESTRUCTION OF GAZA AND NOW EXPECT WE AMERICANS TO CONTINUE TO GIVE OUT TAX DOLLARS TO THEM TO PURCHASE MORE BOMBS, TANKS, BULLDOZERS AND OTHER MEANS OF DESTRUCTION. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. WE HAVE PROSTITUTES AS A CONGRESS. ISRAEL SPIES ON US, TAKES OVER OUR NSA..BETWEEN AIPAC AND THE HUNDREDS OF OTHER ZIONIST PAC's AND LOBBIESTS WHO CONTROL OUR GOVERNMENT...HOW DO SO FEW PEOPLE GET AWAY WITH IT??? ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! IF OBAMA CAN'T GET US OUT OF THE GRIPS OF ISRAEL LET'S IMPEACH HIM RIGHT AWAY!

Arooj Syed   December 29th, 2008 1:20 am ET

Kudos to you Marla for speaking out!

To CNN

Situation in Gaza, Dec 29, 2008.

It is pathetic to look at all the gray haired dressed in blue suit and tie
UN Officials ( five in all from various countries, if I recall correctly) with their comments. Then as a final see the female also gray haired Israel UN Official and the CNN UN correspondent Richard Roth grey haired also dressed in his suit and tie making their clever comments to the newly developed situation in Gaza. Could it be that CNN is getting to be as `lame and bureaocratic´ as the UN.

Now, I wonder where are the normal people with their comments on what is happening?????????? What do they Think?????????

YOU ??? CNN are showing all the pictures of the people with blood in
their faces and the dead on the ground or being carried along the streets by their relatives.

I am grey haired myself and 63 years old but I can not understand, why You are not letting younger people giving their opinon on what is going on in the world. The young people has to give the world the directions of where we are heading. Older people with clever experience are the best, but UN has mostly older men that are waiting for their `fat´ paycheck and producing very little to help the world community! UN should be dismantled and reformed. CNN should set an example.

Sincerely,

I can't comprehend how this genocide continues to occur against the people of Gaza and the world turns a blind eye. Israel is not punishing Hamas with these strikes, it is punishing innocent people who struggle to survive everyday even without Israel bombing them. Now Israel believes that killing more innocent children will somehow weaken or destroy Hamas. Israel is once again using it's military might backed by America's constant unfair support to massacre more Palestinians. When will Israel stop killing these poor Gaza residents? When will the world finally stand up for what is right versus allowing the strong (Israel and America) to dictate what is right? The UN has called for a ceasefire and Israel has ignored (not the first time). How can the world remain silent? How can Egypt refuse to allow those fleeing from Israeli aggression to enter and send them back to their deaths? Have we become such a cold and uncaring world? Won't someone stop this bloodbath?!!

Mr. Presedint, you promised you will put an end to the lobbyists influence in the way the US is run.
Mr. President, the Middle East policy is the first crying for the change, unless your promises exclude the Jewish lobbyists.
Mr. President, the cost is high and the human suffering and miseries are only getting worse and worse.
Mr. President, we outside the US are also hoping for the changes you promised.
Mr. President, we want you to see closely for us also and not just seeing us through the Israeli binoculars.
Mr. President, make the USA to be good at making friends and not as it was good at making enemies.
Mr. President, the key to your success on this is being Just and fair and treating all as human with the same feelings and special needs.
Mr. President, we in the Middle East have our reasons to view the Middle east situation and US treatment as in this link http://saudisolutions.org/USinIRAQ.htm
Mr. President, US successes reflected on US too, US discoveries and inventions helped us too, and we feel the admiration and gratefulness to America, Our Islam teachings tell us " whom they don’t thank people don't thank Allah" thank you America for the good things you gave us,
and America please be fair and just in the middle east conflict, safe lives and money, Save the money for since and technology and prosperity for all.

Outraged Jew   December 29th, 2008 4:22 am ET

Social Justice for ALL. Human Rights for ALL. These are Jewish values.

Control is the Israeli Value–not peace. Shame SHAME on these heartless warmongers.

Far more Palestinians have died than Israelis!! 110 rockets vs. tons of bombs?? Overkill on the Israeli's part–gimme a break!!

Violence begets violence–yes on both sides, NO child–not one–should die on either side. It is two dysfunctional families victiimizing their young for generations to come, and they want to drag the rest of the world down with them! Are we gonna let that happen, world?? INSANE.

I am furious. Obama, please do not listen to Condi or Rahm on this one, go to the grassroots of the ME–it is the USA grassroots that got you where you are today, so tune into the world's grassroots, now, too.

Two State solution, and tear down that f*&^ing apartheid wall!!

Equality for ALL Israel/Palestine and the region

RJ in Washington   December 29th, 2008 4:34 am ET

At risk being labeled a simpleton I struggle to understand the basic conflict.

I see no resolution to this conflict until both sides become converts to their ideological beliefs.

It is one thing to give lip service and say “I am a Christian” or “I am a Jew”, but it is quite another thing to commit to these ideologies through your actions.

It is my understanding that the first law of both is: “Thou Shall Not Kill”.

Debs   December 29th, 2008 5:00 am ET

Arooj,

It is my sincere hope that will happen. The first thing he needs to don is to start repairing the image of America, bush has left it in ruins. In the eyes of the world America is seen as an agressor, which it isnt fair American values are actually built on a fair a just system with equality for all.

I hope Obama can help found a peace agreement for Palestine and Israel. That part of the world is beautiful, full of heritage and culture. It could be a thriving vibrant place. Do you think we ever see that?

Wa'Aleikum Salam

Saudi   December 29th, 2008 5:35 am ET

Mr. President,

USA being the great supporter and paying endlessly for it in Iraq and Afghanistan should take control on the situation and do what is right and meet with the American values, not just what the Mad Zionists want.

Be part of the solutions agree by both opponents not part of the problem as being completely sided with strong one.

Or else do not clime you are the great human rights moral protector.

M Ariely   December 29th, 2008 6:19 am ET

Should the modern world respond with a proportional doctrine and actions similar to the many Islamist doctrines currently popular in many parts of the world?

Doctrines that
Preaches for world domination by Islamists
Kill Infidels
Glorifying death on current life for benefits on the next one
Firing and hiding between their own people

THE ANSWER IS N0-
THE MODERN WORLD SHOULD KEEP THE MORAL VALUES OF HUMAN RIGHTS

SUCH AS ISRAEL

And stand firmly until Muslim people will choose to follow a peace and life loving path that is in Quran as well

Hala   December 29th, 2008 6:27 am ET

I support what was said in Solomon comment, all UN security council decisions need to be addressed. The long gone authority of UN should be recognized. Palestenians have been denied for generations their rights in a peaceful country. All the vicious cycle of struggle and wars in the Middle East is caused by the Israeli occupations to Palestine.

miriam   December 29th, 2008 6:47 am ET

Marla, Israel was not plopped in the middle of the Middle East. The land has been central to Jews for thousands of years and been a homeland for generations through massacres, exiles and destruction. The Jews would never have considered Germany their national homeland and were only resident there after being kicked out of England, France, Spain, Portugal etc over the centuries. Jews from Arab countries and the Far East, or indeed those who can trace their family roots for hundreds of years in the Holyland, would not have considered anywhere in Europe a homeland. The problem is the Arabs and Muslim world who blindly reject the right for Jews to live in the land that is sacred to their religion and central to their history. This denial, based on anti-semitism, and which has been translated into hatred, has spread across the globe to people who have been deceived by Arab lies and propoganda. Jews have always been present in what is now Israel and the territories and immigration increased as a result of European anti-Jewish attacks a century before the Holocaust. After the British conquered the area from the Ottomans and plans were drawn-up, approved, rejected and reapproved for an Arab state and a Jewish state, the Arabs prefered to use war to destroy the Jews but failed. It is that failure that still haunts them today and one which they are still determined to reverse through force.

Solomon,

THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT SAUDI KING ABDULLAH CALLED AND STILL CALLING FOR.

Instead of going for positive reply for peace, Israel leadership's choise and intentions were clear "ongoing buidling of settlements in west bank" and surrounding and blockage all around Gaza to make the Gazans live in misery to finish that today with military force and killings.

Steven   December 29th, 2008 9:50 am ET

I have one question to ask,,,to all the Humane Rights Watch, and all the other countries, crying and accusing Israel of barbaric behaviour.
We were you when Israel was being bombed regularily ,with thousands of Hamas sponsored Iranian Rockets???Where were you when israelis were injured and killed by these same rockets??Why was not a picture of an Israeli child screaming his heart out when a rocket fell on his home,Is a Palestinian child so different to an Israeli, child;;And where is the International community, now that 13 CHILDREN were killed in Afganistan, this week end???
aLL these violent manifestations are proof of such international HYPOCRACY,Its sickening to watch;;;;

Beny   December 29th, 2008 10:18 am ET

EVERYBODY HERE,

ISRAEL HAS BEEN SUFFERING FROM TERRORISTS EVER SINCE ITS CREATION. WHAT YOU CALL "OCCUPATION" IS MERELY MILITARY PRESENCE IN THE WEST BANK TO STOP THOSE TERRORISTS.

SOUTH ISRAEL HAS BEEN SUFFERING FROM KASSAMS, SUICIDE BOMBERS AND SNIPERS FOR 8 GODDAMN YEARS! TELL ME OF A COUNTRY THAT WOULD HAVE RESTRAINED ITSELF FOR SO LONG!

AFTER HAMAS CONTINUALLY VIOLATES ALL CEASE-FIRES AND REJECT ALL AGREEMENTS, PROMISING TO DESTROY US NO MATTER WHAT THE PALESTINIAN COST MAY BE, HOW DO YOU PROPOSE WE DEFEND OURSELVES?

COME ON, I'M OPEN FOR SUGGESTIONS.

Saudi   December 29th, 2008 10:22 am ET

Marla,

What in Miriam is saying to you is,

No credit to Britain and US for making Israel what it is today, Israel is on its own and No need for the US help. The say in now for Israel and not for any one else, the morality is what Israel says, every one else shut up.

today Israel is made up and the US http://saudisolutions.org/USinIRAQ.htm

Outraged Jew,

I am an outraged Jew too. Outraged that for 8 years rockets were fallling on my brothers in south Israel, and the world tells us to "show restraint".
Especially when anyone else would have turned Gaza into a smoking crater by now.

Outraged that people call the wall a "f^%&ing apartheid" (do you even know what it means?) and forget the reason it is there- to stop terrorists from infiltrating our borders.

Or do you want to return to the "exploding buses" days?

Beny   December 29th, 2008 10:30 am ET

Solomon,

I know that hearing about Israelis killed helps you sleep at night, so here:

15 killed, over 400 wounded from Kassams.

6 killed from snipers.

Over 1200 killed from various Arab terrorism throughout the years, mostly suicide bombers.

And you compare it to the 20 maybe 30 innocent Palestinians killed by Israel? Among 200 Hamas who used them as human shields?

Saudi   December 29th, 2008 10:50 am ET

When you have bunch of youngsters fighting and amongst them is an adult one, who would you hold responsible and accountable???

U.S.A. IS BIG GUY.

Saudi   December 29th, 2008 11:11 am ET

U.S.A. IS THE BIG GUY,

USA ought to choose and say

1. "Agreeing to the Israeli ways!" and that would
automatically make USA as enemy as Israel is.

2. Not agreeing but failing to make the control over the
situation that helped making and add that to the Iraq
situation,

For the 2. Case we will pray for God Guidance to the US leadership that someday will do the right, Fair and Just things that will produce good results.

Fawad Ali   December 29th, 2008 1:25 pm ET

‘Struggling for independence’ or ‘fighting terror’ should not be confused with an ‘act of Genocide’…………these actions transcend all the underline issues…….

Call them terrorist, but Hamas is supported by majority of Palestinians in Gaza…….. IDF said ‘they want to wiped-out every inch of Hamas, for that they have to kill majority of Palestinians…….and that is crazy

But in the last few days, IDF is working it’s heart out to materialize it’s intentions………

Beny   December 29th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

Israel is ceasing its airstrikes, and calling up infantry forces (Givati, Golani and Kfir) to enter Gaza on foot and assault terrorist bases.

WHY ARE WE DOING THAT?

Israel can easily flatten Gaza into a pile of rubble, and that will indeed accomplish our objective: DESTRUCTION OF HAMAS’S MILITARY ABILITIES. Not a single soldier sent, we can end this here and now.

The problem, as you’ve already guessed, is that many civilian (not entirely innocent, but not Hamas either) Gazans will be killed in this airstrike. Unless you’re Hamas, of course, and then you don’t see the problem with civilians being killed. Despite the fact the EVERY OTHER COUNTRY WOULD HAVE DONE THAT BY NOW, Israel is somewhat saner.

Instead we are risking the lives of our own Israelis, in order to defeat Hamas with as few civilian casualties as possible.

THEY SHOOT FROM DENSE POPULATION, HOPING TO GET SOME BODIES TO FLAUNT IN FRONT OF THE WESTERN MEDIA. WE RISK OUR OWN MEN TO AVOID THIS. WHO ARE THE COWARDS HERE?

Peter Vandenplas   December 29th, 2008 2:01 pm ET

Gaza

The Middle-East region and the rest of the world have had enough of this ongoing disputes – All are waiting for the Palestinians and Israel to be in peace with each other – to evolve from hostility to collaborative exchange – The Middle-East authorities as the international community should impose that Israel and Palestinia install a common infrastructure dedicated in finding agreements between both sides instead of differences – seeks peace instead of warfare – seek comprehension instead of mis-understanding. If there occurs any violation of this mutual accepted foundation, it should internally and immediately be dealt with by its local authorities. Is it visionnary or foolish to accept that children of Palestinians and Israelis play one day together without any anger? Let there be hope.

May be because pilots are tired of Killing innocent children.......and soldiers can’t wait to unleash their Jihad against civilians.......

And please don't even think I am joking.........

Beny   December 29th, 2008 2:08 pm ET

Solomon,

"for you to defend Israel end occupation"

And was Israel safe before the "occupation"?

What you call "occupation" is MILITARY PRESENCE NECESSARY TO DEFEND ISRAEL AGAINST TERRORISTS WORKING FROM THE WEST BANK AND GAZA.

You're telling me that stopping this will help Israel?!

Fawad,

YES FAWAD, WE DID ALREADY TRY EVERTHING ON YOUR LIST

(except maybe "grabbing their lands" which is bullsh*t and you know it. lands they lost in a stupid war they started against us aren't "theirs")

Everything you just described was already tried at one point or another throughout Israel's bloody war for survival. As you can easily see, it didn't help.

Besides, how does supplying our enemy (did you know that Israel supplies 80% of electricity into Gaza?) help us defend against an organization that was created with the sole purpose of
"liberating Palestine from the Jordan to the Mediterranean"?

Beny   December 29th, 2008 2:15 pm ET

Um...Fawad...you got it a bit wrong on how jihad works around here.

For 60 years (and before, too) a continuing jihad was waged for Israel's destruction.

Doing the only remaining option left to defend Israel of the aforesaid jihad, while doing maximum efforts to avoid civilian deaths (no country in the world is as careful to avoid civilians as we are), that isn't jihad.

Solomon   December 29th, 2008 2:24 pm ET

Beny.

"Israel is ceasing its airstrikes, and calling up infantry forces (Givati, Golani and Kfir) to enter Gaza on foot and assault terrorist bases?"

why you did not do it in the first place why kill and wound 1200 humans why destroy civilian infrastructure why destroy a University ?why destroy Mosques? why destroy UNRWA offices.

your enemy is Hamas send your army to fight Hamas dont kill woman and children.

Beny one thing I assure you and we will talk about this in the next few weeks Just like Hizbollah is more stronger now than before the Israeli invasion of Lebanon the same will happen with Hamas.
occupiers are stupid they never learn from History. you can not stop a people from Having their freedom.

karanjah   December 29th, 2008 2:24 pm ET

If you want everlasting peace in middle east, there should be only One state and Not two state policy for all of them ( Israels and Palastinians) let all the Palestians living in exile go back to thier homeland without any condations. Those Jews who want to live in peace should respect their brothers Palestinians otherwise i see no resolution for this conflict until both side become converts to their ideological beliefs that they are all the same in the eyes of God of Ibrahim. This will stop second Holocaust.

Chernor Jalloh   December 29th, 2008 2:36 pm ET

I donot think Obama is serious about bringing peace in the Middle East for a reason best known to every one.We all know Ms Rice's stance on the peace process between the Israelis and the Palestinians.Bush and rice are helping the other factions against the other,so how can peace be achieved when the other groups are shoved to the corner? It is impossible.Mahamud Abas is seen as stooge of the Zionists and racists EU as well as the US and its lobbysts criminals!

Barack Obama has disappointed me so much that there are no words to express my anger. How on earth he can sitdown and ignore the plight of the people of Gaza?Iam abashed even if he has spoken to Rice on telephone regarding the situation in Gaza since Israel began its campaign of mass murder of the Palestinian people with illegal weapons as it is known of there is little room for manouver.

I fully agree that Israel is a democratic country and one of the most powerful in the region supported by the Jews lobbysts(AIPAC) together with the US and the EU to erect illegal settlements and instill catastrophy on the lives of the Palestinians. The killing of Palestinians is not something new, this dated back ever since the Zionist entity was established some sixty years ago.Obama unlike George Bush have innocent blood in their hands. This is rather unfortunate that the UN can issue a resolution to fight piracy in the waters of Somalia and the US and the Britsh are calling for a regime change in Zimbabwe by removing Mugabe from power, but sadly though they cannot have the leverage to try and bring to anend the constant suffering of the Palestinian people, especially in Gaza.More than 300 people haved been murdered in cold blood so far and more than 1,500 have been injured and all of the hospitals are empty due to the continious blockade in the Gaza strip.Egypt is manning its Rafa border croosing with the Zionists entity.

Even aid workers that want to help salvage the wounded they cannot do so because President Mubarak is supporting the Zaionists against his Arabs brothers and sisters. This is what Arab unity stands for.Back in 2003 they allowed their air space to be used by the Americans to lauch attacks in Iraq and now the same Arab regimes are condemning the brutal actions taken by Israel. It is only God who can save the people of Gaza from the monsters!

Beny   December 29th, 2008 2:42 pm ET

Solomon,

"why did you not do it in the first place"

I know you would be very glad to hear Israelis killed, but we try to avoid that. Besides, the airstrikes ave killed Hamas to civilians at a ratio of 8:1.
Give me an example of another country that fought its terrorists with so few civilian casualties.

"you can not stop a people from Having their freedom."

Very true. Eventually, and perhaps with our help, the Palestinians will be free of the terrorists that slaughter their own (Hamas-Fatah clashes killed more innocents than Israel has) and sacrifice their own children to kill ours.

Collective punishment is the only way to end Palestinian support for Hamas..............

Danny   December 29th, 2008 3:37 pm ET

some observations:
1. when innocent people are killed all over the Middle East by Arab suicide bombers – not a single demonstration ANYWHERE ! when Israel kills inadvertantly 50 innocent bystanders (which is awful and sad) – the whole world has an opinion.
2. Hamas shells Israel CONSTANTLY with rockets. Even during the so called truce – one or two rockets were fired each day. That is how terror works ! you never know when it will hit you !
3. Israel warned Hamas of the consequences – but was not heeded. Hamas NEEDS the bloodshed in order to survive. if anyone has a constructive idea how to deterre the Hamas – you are welcome to suggest.

Paula Hck   December 29th, 2008 3:39 pm ET

Collective punishment is the only way to end Palestinian support for Hamas......................hopefully Hamas will end soon, and so the operation.....

John Burkle   December 29th, 2008 4:32 pm ET

I am so sick and tired of hearing the Palestinians being labeled "terrorists". Does anybody remember the true history of the region?
Israel has illegally occupied the country since 1948. If I went back to my ancestors homeland of 2000 years ago, (somewhere in central Europe) and said to the current inhabitants, "My jesus-god has a book that says this land is mine, now get off my land." Do you think they would resist? I certainly would. How about if you had to use dirt roads interspersed with roadblocks instead of the modern highway, simply because you are not a jew? This is just another version of Nazism, or Apartheid, or call it what it is: RACISM We used to not let blacks drink from the same water fountain here in the good ol' USA, but that was 60 years ago. Right about the time the state of israel was founded.
Wake up, people. We allow our government to send 9 million dollars a day to the jews, and they use a portion of that to kill Palestinians.
They persecute based on religion.
They do not allow construction equipment into the occupied zones. They refuse admittance to occupied zones of humanitarian aid.
They continue to allow "settlers", who are the real terrorists, to build new towns on land they stole.
If this was your life, what would you do?
I can guarantee, GUARANTEE, that I will be called many names simply because I speak out against the jews. That is OK, it's just a defense mechanism they use to turn the sympathy back on them.
I am an atheist, so I could care less which religion/cult controls Al-Quds/Jerusalem.
In fact, turning the area into a smoking, nuclear waste zone, would allow all 3 cults to pick a new "home" for their ignorant beliefs.

txkboy   December 29th, 2008 4:38 pm ET

So, does anyone really think that a new administration is going to ease fighting between people that have been doing it since biblical days? The US has enough of it's own problems without the Arabs. They won't stop fighting until they blow each other off the map.

Mike   December 29th, 2008 4:59 pm ET

Doesnt anybody see the double standard being applied here.

Israel warned, and warned, and talked, and talked, and appeased, and appeased and still Hamas continued lobbing mortars and rockets at Israel.

The have what they need, the have a seperate area for themselves, leave Israel alone, and Israel will leave Hamas alone.

How much can a nation state take before they are compelled to act, and only then does the world stand together to condemn self defense?

Where were all these countries telling to Hamas "hey, you better knock it off, or your gonna get one"?

All these protesters want peace, want stability, want, want, want....what are they willing to give towards it....where are they in helping the problem?

Saudi   December 29th, 2008 5:01 pm ET

Beny,

If Israeli leadership do respect Abbas they would have at least suspended the Building of settlements in the west bank where Abbas and Fatah are staying and while negotiating the dream of Pease!!! http://saudisolutions.org/abbasd2.jpg

To the simple and straight thing people Abbas and Fatah are the stooges,

For Abbas and Fatah, "it is business", they are not stooges, they know the game and Israel's intention and determination, and they have to stay in business and receive their payments and incentives.

Beny   December 29th, 2008 5:24 pm ET

The equation is this: first you stop sending suicide bombers at us, then we stop the military presence you call "occupation", then you agree that the land we give you you'll use for hospitals instead of launching pads, then we stop the VERY LEGAL SETTLEMENTS and give you the land that was intended for them.

You sure are offered a lot for the simple request that you stop attack us. What's your problem?

Daniel Rowe   December 29th, 2008 5:25 pm ET

I would like to know ? when is this world going to learn that Israel is GOD"S chosen country and people. And you don't fool with Israel because Israel will be the only country left after the 2nd coming of Christ. Because Jersuslem will be the Capital of the new world.

frida   December 29th, 2008 5:42 pm ET

We talk about genocide in Armenia, genocide in Rwanda, genocide in Bosnia, genocide in Cambodia...just how many dead is it going to take for the world to realize that genocide is taking place in Palestine?

Robert Garel   December 29th, 2008 5:43 pm ET

I think our military has become out of control. In the beginning we had to build planes to fight German and Japanese planes in WWll. Since the end of WWll our country has justified the continued use of these horrible weopens for just about any reason at all. I do not believe we have the ability to stop. As long as these awesome airplanes, airbombs, and ground bombs are allowed by ordinary people like you and I , these weopens will be used. People in Arabian countries also face the same situation with suicide bombers. To have ones own child build a bomb and explode the bomb in public must be terrible. As a child I remember the dislocation of the Palestinians for decades. My parents spoke of the Holy Land and Jesus! I of coarse lapped it all up. I didn't realize they were displacing people that were born on that land. The worst part however is the continued use of awesome terrible weopens of mass destruction on poor civillians. Our people are so sold on the Millitary .

Beny   December 29th, 2008 5:45 pm ET

Daniel,

I don't know about God, being an atheist myself, but seeing how Europe is soon to be overppopulated by Muslims, Israel might well be the last man standing.

Youmna   December 29th, 2008 6:01 pm ET

Children are being killed in Gaza and Barak Obama is still watching. What a pity!

Saudi   December 29th, 2008 6:02 pm ET

THIS IS A REVENGE AND RETALIATION WAR producing nothing and achieving nothing except self satisfaction and releasing of anger and getting out it of the chest. Irresponsible, illogical and showing nothing but signs of dismal failure, what is happening is nothing but madness.

The Gazans will stay as they are the Gazans, as they are made to be, because of the blockade angry, hungry, and poor people left with no future and nothing to loose and live for. Today they are waiting impatiently for the Israelis solders to get closer and into their streets and corners, more massacres and more and more blood.

The big question is how would all of that stop the launching of rackets in future???!!!

"Rockets and not imported, they are home made"

As occupation continues, there will always be ways to resist and fight back, rockets are the ultimate weapon, Sharon's wall is obsolete.

End the occupation today.

Beny   December 29th, 2008 7:38 pm ET

THIS IS A DEFENCE WAR. THIS IS A WAR TO END THE ROCKETS. AND THE SUICIDE BOMBERS. AND THE SNIPERS. AND BECAUSE HAMAS'S DEFINITION IS "ROCKETS AND SUICIDE BOMBERS"...

It is Hamas's war of destruction against us that has brought them nothing but pain. What they are doing is nothing but madness.

Israel will stay as Israel, as we are made to be, because of the terrorism: angry, frustrated at the continual rejection of peace by the other side. 60 years of being constantly attacked have made us jumpy and paranoid and we still fight the most careful war on terror possible. Everybody is fat enough on Arab oil to hate us, but hey, we Jews are used to it.

1)
And exactly because the rockets are home-made we have no option but to destroy the home that makes them.

2)
Other supplies are brought in from Iran and Syria through countless tunnels in the Philadelphi strip, and that is the other objective of this operation.

3)
Finally, rockets aren't half as dangerous as the beasts who shoot them, and that is the third objective.

Rockets are indeed the best weapon: They are cheap, and aimed at civilians only. And that is Hamas's wet dream- Israeli kids killed.

But Sharon's wall is the only reason I am talking to you now, instead of BEING SPLATTERED AROUND THE REMAINS OF AN EXPLODED BUS.

End the rockets and suicide bombers today.

Semsa Alic, Bosnia and Herzegovina   December 29th, 2008 8:25 pm ET

I have read all the comments and I wondered – what is CNN doing with them?
I even wrote a long one from my perspective of a recent war survivor and decided not to post – what's the point? Comments are not going to bring people to sanity and end wars. One person, no matter how powerfull, is not ending a war. That is a fairytale, a distraction from the real issue. There are real people getting killed, we watch on TV and also participate in a global game of words. Those people, people, I say, not Israeli and Palestinians, need help, force not words to stop force and get them their lives back. Or at least a choice – massive evacuations so those who want to live in peace, live somewhere else until the madness ends.
It's just not worth it.

Helen   December 29th, 2008 9:01 pm ET

IT IS VERY SAD INDEED TO READ ALL THESE COMMENTS ... KILLING CHILDREN AND UNARMED INNOCENT PEOPLE CAN NEVER BE JUSTIFIED; IF ANYONE BELIEVES SO THEN HE ALSO SIMPLY JUSTIFIES THE HOLOCAUST. ANY JEW THAT HONORS HIS ANCESTRY DOES NOT KILL CHILDREN, BECAUSE IN THE EYES OF THE WORLD THAT MAKES HIM A COLD BLOODED MURDERER, JUST LIKE THE 3RD REICH ...
WE SAY PALESTINIANS ARE MURDERERS. THAT WE ARE GOD’S FAVORITE CHILDREN; DO YOU REALLY BELIEVE THAT GOD FAVORS MURDERERS? GOD'S FAVORITE CHILDREN WOULD SEEK PEACE AND WOULD CO-EXIST WITH ALL OTHER CHILDREN...LIKE THEY DO IN THE U.S. , THE U.K., THE NETHERLANDS, GERMANY, AUSTRIA ETC. THEY DO NOT STOOP THAT LOW.
LIKE THEY DID IN THE MIDDLE EAST WITH THE PALESTINIANS FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS AND NO ONE WENT TO WAR WHEN PALESTINE WAS FOUNDED. WHY? CAUSE UNTIL 1949 THERE WAS NO NEED TO CLAIM ANY LAND IN THE NAME OF A NEW NATION NAMED ISRAEL. CAUSE JEWS HAD LAND AND HOMES AND ISRAEL WAS EVERYWHERE.
WHY IN 1949 THE VICTORIOUS NATIONS DID NOT PROVIDE SAFE RETURN OF ALL OUR ANCESTORS BACK TO THEIR COUNTRIES AND RECLAIM THEIR HOMES AND LIFES, BUT SHIPPED THEM FAR AWAY TO THE MIDDLE EAST?
WHY DID THEY SEND THE JEWS TO PALESTINE AND DEMANDED FROM THE PEOPLE THAT LIVED THERE TO LEAVE THEIR HOMES AND THEIR LAND AND HAND IT OVER TO FOUND THE NEW NATION OF ISRAEL?
THAT’S HOW WE BECAME ENEMIES. ‘DEVIDE AND CONQUER’… DOES THAT TELL YOU SOMETHING? READ HISTORY AND PRAY MR OBAMA WILL KEEP HIS WORD FOR PEACE….

zzTop   December 29th, 2008 9:13 pm ET

Hamas should really be firing their rockets at Egypt, not Israel because Egypt has an abundance of land for the Palestinians that they are withholding, probably 20 times as much as Israel. Israel already gave them Jordan but they are never satisfied. Remember the Palestianians never governed the land, they were merely nomads. Jerusalem was built by Jewish Kings.

Debs   December 29th, 2008 9:50 pm ET

Paula,
collective punishement is the only way to stop palestinian support for hamas.

Your comments are very cold. You dont know much about the full situation. How can you condone the killing of any human like this?

Beny,

Why are you having a go at outragged jew? He is critisizing his government, he has a right. To be honest so would I, I did when we invaded Iraq.....the point is Your government is behaving very brutal..

Israel isnt perfect, she does have a right to stand up to terrorism, but not this. It seems like you government is acting like it does not care one bit about civilians killed,

Im not taking sides but I really cant condone this sort of killing, there are too many civilians being killed.

Can anyone tell me UN buildings are being hit??

Can anyone tell me why UN resolutions are being broken by EVERYONE!!

How can anyone sit by and not demand all of this violence stop. Has everyone lost their humanity!!!

Debs   December 29th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

Antonio   December 30th, 2008 1:10 am ET

We have globalized poverty, financial crisis, but not justice. That's what Israelis and Palestinians need.

Outraged Jew   December 30th, 2008 3:12 am ET

It's basic folks, Brains not brawn.

An alternative to violence? Is there one? Can you all really afford to continue the insanity? Jews, Muslims, Israelis, Palestinians are here to stay, can you all live with that fact?

Can you, Beny and Solomon accept the fact that neither of you is going to leave? You, your kids and grandkids are here to stay–do you really think wiping each other out is the solution??

Everyone on all sides here, what really do you think will be the long term outcome here? Isolation for Israel, annihilation of a people?

Will this REALLY be a resolution for your kids?? A final solution, perhaps, but the one you really wish for your descendants?

Debs   December 30th, 2008 3:30 am ET

Outraged Jew.

Once agin, thank you for rational, and true comments. You havent lost the concept of showing humanity.

Solomon and Beny,

You should take a leaf out of this guys book. Both of you have said relevant comments but it really is time for the past to be left in the past. Move on for for the sake of peace and move to reconcilation its never too late to put down arms and cease the violence. Do it for the sake of your selves and your kids.

Solomon   December 30th, 2008 4:22 am ET

Outraged Jew.

I never said that the Jews have no right to be here but at the same time Palestinians are not emigrants they have been in Palestine for centuries.

Israel can not say that she want a Palestinian state at a time when there is not much left of the west bank it looks like a swiss cheese with all the
Settlements.

jews and Arabs have been living together for centuries I dont see why they should not continue to do so, as long as there is Justice for both.

Outraged Jew   December 30th, 2008 5:17 am ET

You are very right, Solomon, but from Beny's POV, many have said "Jews don't have a right to be here". Same on the Palestinian side.

Actions speak louder than words but words turn into ugly action these days!

There is much fear on both sides. Addressing the fear to the other may go further than debating historical perspectives and bombing each other.

I believe the majority of people on both sides do not want to "push the other into the sea" but the behavior of a few who do demonstrates otherwise on all sides and terrifies all.

So what happens? Violence, terror and an endless cycle of hate.

It would be great to see Jews and Arabs get to the point of once again living together–peacefully.

Thoughts, Beny?

For
Beny December 29th, 2008 1938 GMT

There were some events in time that changed history course, and become the seeds that and fusel that powered long term ideological epochs, today in history occupying people land by force and determination to kill and kill is one of those events.

• The Jewish holocaust has to be replayed to sympathy with Jews and support them.

• What is happening in this time of history to the Muslim Palestinians is displayed live and being witnessed by 6,000,000,000 people and instantly, days and nights.

• The Islamic Nation is vast and global, the spread of Islam and Muslims and expansion is phenomenal and in all directions, like that of cosmos, the speed of expanding is ever increasing.

• The Islamic Nation may have subsided and slept at one time but the overall growth and expansion is ever ongoing.

• Today, The time is not right but nothing stay the same, The Islamic Nation may get ill and sleep but never die and surly her Memory Never die either.

• This point of time in history is in Israel's favor, but nothing stayed the same for any body. All protectors of Israel don’t have the guarantee to last even for their own protection.

• Israel, go on with killing; make it more and more memorable.

• The Islamic nation is as vast as the time itself, and it can wait for the right moment in time to come.

Thank you for your input on the matter. It seems being honest AND human is hard for a lot of people these days. I am wondering why our president is just "monitoring" the situation "very closely".

ben   December 30th, 2008 7:46 am ET

people kindly look at south africa, before and after change, look at kofi annan in un as secretary, look at robert mugabe work out of zimbabwe, look at condi rice term and now its obama time, what a pity.

miriam   December 30th, 2008 9:24 am ET

OJ, there are many places in Israel where Jews and Arabs live and work together peacefully.

Unfortunately, each group gets its news from different sources that can cause that happy relationship to melt. Take for example the Jewish and Arab business partners who are now lying side-by-side in hospital after the Arab stabbed the Jew.

If you watch Israeli News you will hear discussion, analysis and sympathetic reporting on both sides of the conflict even though it is clear to almost every Israeli that this operation was, and has been for a long time, necessary.

If you watch Arab TV you see angry, gruesome pictures over and over again accompanied by the resulting protests calling for the destruction of Israel, killing of Jews and blind support for a terrorist organization.

When a tiny group of disgruntled young Israelis display some civil disobedience there is an international outcry. When half the world is calling for the death and destruction of an entire nation, the other half of the world stands still and is even ammused.

Jul   December 30th, 2008 1:10 pm ET

The Palestinian Terrorists have always used their own civilians as living shiled – so they are to be blamed for the civilian deaths.

Saudi   December 30th, 2008 4:41 pm ET

Jul,

Without the West support to keep Israel in the Middle East you will do worse.

You could stay labeling Palestinian "terrorists" and for self satisfaction as long as you like or until you die, that would never change the reality, Jul.

The reality is that Palestinians' territories are occupied by a superpower supported and backed by a superpower; Palestinians are defending themselves and their territories by the available means. Israel evacuated the room but still surrounding the house of Gaza.

Jason B   December 30th, 2008 5:20 pm ET

The solution to this problem lies with the Palestinians and Israels, this conflict has been going on for decades and to expect a solution from an incoming US president is absurd.

Jason B   December 30th, 2008 5:25 pm ET

Obama's quote works both ways if he was living in the Gaza strip with his daughters and they were being bombed by Israel he would also likely do every thing in his power to stop the attacks.

Debs   December 30th, 2008 6:22 pm ET

Miriam,

On contrary to what you have just said about Israeli media. Over here in the US all we have heard is the Israeli foriegn minister condeming Palestinian society as awhole. And whe news anchor commented about the severity of the airstrikes and the civilians killed he responded by saying "what, do you want to us to send them flowers". That was callous and cold hearted. For no thought or remorse shown to these civilians killed is unacceptable.

Innocent civilians are being killed on both sides. When Hamas was (and still is) sending rockets into southern Israel, we all condemed them for it.

Humanity needs to be shown to both sides. The violence between Israel and Palestine has got to stop

Salam and Shalom to all

Debs   December 30th, 2008 6:24 pm ET

Miriam,

appologies, the news report I was referring to wasnt the foreign minister, He was the Israeli ambassador to the US.

dan perman   December 30th, 2008 9:24 pm ET

Debs,
You mean to say that “one of the most powerful armies in the world” has been bombing Gaza for days, deploying massive air power, dropping hundreds of bombs, and ultimately killing a grand total of 60 civilians or so in the “most crowded place on earth?” (number from gaza sources!!!!)
There are two options here: A) The Israeli army is not targeting civilians, or B) Israeli pilots suck.

I tend to go with option A.

Debs   December 30th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

Dan,

It doesnt matter about numbers. Israelis being killed by hamas rockets and suicide bombers.

Palestinian civilins being killed by Israeli ground forces and Airstrikes

One life or 60 lifes lost. It is all a tragic mess. All of these people were human beings. They probably had families that cared for them. It is a tragedy for all invoved...

I am just about ready to throw in the towel on this. Every thing is fine until someone shoes some sort of humanity to Palestinian civilians (NOT HAMAS OR TERRORISTS!) Then we all get rounded on....The true situation is both you (Israelis) and Palestinians have every right to live in the region. Recpricating violence with violence will never solve the situation..

Outraged Jew,

Please try and talk some sense to Dan, Beny and Solomon, maybe they listen to you......

Salam and Shalom to all

aarennels   December 30th, 2008 10:40 pm ET

Seems the USA, England and Europe, etc. put the Jews in Israel for at east 2 reasons.
1.) They didn't want the Jews on "their" land (maybe I exaggerate here)
2.) To use the Jews for a path to the OIL ----
There were other places to carve out a spot for a Jewish Homeland. And each Jew who survived the Holocaust "could have" returned to their homeland BUT - well you know the definition of a bigot!

Now, 60+ years later, the only solution is to let the fighting continue or find a new home for the Jews - The Muslims want the Christians, Jews and all non-Mulsims OFF their land. (Out of Iraq too) - But the OIL is there and until we decide to use alternative fuels this situation is hopeless.

You cannot expect peace between the Jews and Muslims when the Christians (not all) separate a Jew or a Muslim from "their own kind."

The root of this is political bigotry. Who profits? the politicians in the USA, Europe, and even the Arab rulers. So the solution is not to stop the fighting but to find the truth and say it like it is and then DEAL with it.

Outraged Jew   December 30th, 2008 11:05 pm ET

It is all dialog.

This is one of the most difficult dialogs on the planet right now, if not THE most difficult one!!

The bottom line–and you are correct, Debs–"The true situation is both you (Israelis) and Palestinians have every right to live in the region."

Both sides are terrified of having this right taken away. We see what happens when one side has more 'toys' than the other.

Would it be the same if the shoe were on the other foot?

I cannot change people's minds, but hopefully the dialog can continue to a point of resolution-insults and condescension aside.

Stay with the issues, folks. Dig through the hurtful words, try not to take it personally–hard to do, take a break when needed–and keep talking.

"Sticks and stones (guns and bombs) break bones (maim and kill) but don't let names (words) hurt you"

Debs   December 31st, 2008 3:31 am ET

Outraged Jew,

Yes,

Talking keeping and open dialogue is the only way out of this mess.

If both sides could for one moment and realise that they both have a rigth to the land and both share a deep religious and cultural belonging to the region.

Hamas have got to stop firing its rockets and barak needs to call off the airstrikes. Humanity needs to be shown.

Salam and Shalom to all

Outraged Jew   December 31st, 2008 5:44 am ET

Human Faces need to be shown more in the media of both sides, and weapons bombs less.

Debs   December 31st, 2008 7:51 pm ET

Yes, I agree 100 percent.

The biggest proportion of people, Palestinians and Israelis just want to live peaceful lives in thier homelands.

The media needs to be more aware of that.

Why is there no media coverage on the Israeli doctors that work on a volunteer humanitarian programme in the west bank and gaza. Why is there no media coverage of the Palestininan nurse working in a Isareli hospital?? I have said this before.. There is humanity still left..

If there is one good person left, that is one grain of humanity, plant that one grain and it will become a field.

Salam and Shalom to all
