(CNN) - A family in Saudi Arabia has taken a genie to court, alleging theft and harassment, according to local media.

The lawsuit filed in Shariah court accuses the genie of leaving them threatening voicemails, stealing their cell phones and hurling rocks at them when they leave their house at night, said Al-Watan newspaper.

An investigation was under way, local court officials said.

"We have to verify the truthfulness of this case despite the difficulty of doing so," Sheikh Amr Al Salmi, the head of the court, told Al-Watan. "What makes this case and complaint more interesting is that it wasn't filed by just one person. Every member of the family is part of this case."

The family, which has lived in the same house near the holy city of Medina for 15 years, said it became aware of the spirit in the past two years.

"We began hearing strange noises," the head of the family, who requested anonymity, told Al-Watan. "In the beginning, we didn't take it seriously, but after that, stranger things started happening and the children got really scared when the genie began throwing stones."

A local charity has moved the family to a temporary residence while a court investigates, the newspaper said.

In Islamic cultures, a belief in genies, or jinns, is common.

Genies not only appear in pre-Islamic fiction such as "Arabian Nights," but are also mentioned in the Quran.

Many Saudis believe invisible genies live among them and are capable of demonic possession and revenge.

"In Islamic cultures, a belief in genies, or jinns, is common."

That's the funniest thing I've heard all day! Talk about still living in the 7th century! Maybe they can blame Islamic terrorism on the bad genies and jinns who are making them do these horrible things around the world.

I hope the shariah court sentences the genie to 1300 years back in her bottle. Maybe by then Islamic cultures (if any are left) will have advanced to where the rest of the world is today. I'd like to see them enforce the sentence. We all know that the shariah courts are good at cutting off people's body parts, stoning women and hanging children, but can they put a genie back into a bottle? That I'd like to see.

I'd love to hear the voicemails from the genie that are admitted into evidence! Who knew genies had phones? LOL

Thanks, CNN!

this genie have to be prosecuted
he is a bad one ... throwing stones is not nice
he is a criminal!

put him into a bottle and drop him into the sea in the name of solomon!

I found this very interesting. In the west, we have different terms and beliefs but they all probably jell on some level. Certainly in the West we sue a lot, so it's a mix of ideas. How did this case turn out in the end? What was the court's decision?

People believe so many funny things i.e. circumcision – the child abuse of a baby boys foreskin; burning bushes, parting the dead sea, God promising a land to a chosen people, apartheid, racism. Some believe all Muslims are inferior. Sadly some believe these freakish beliefs are worth life and death with constant conflict.

Some people even think the UN, Amnesty International & The Red Cross support Hamas when the accuse Israel of war crimes and constant discrimination!!

There a lots of strange people with weird and wonderful beliefs.

John A,

Once again, you fail to even comprehend--or read the article to which you are posting !

Barry didn't write “In Islamic cultures, a belief in genies, or jinns, is common.”

That's quote direct from the article !!! If you're going to chastise someone for their remarks-you should at least direct it to one who made the remark!

Maybe you should get Itai to help you with your comprehension problems.

John A   July 17th, 2009 1:21 pm ET

Filipe your ignorance shows again. Quotation marks indicate Barry is quoting and the sentenced followed without quotation marks indicates Barry is not quoting. Not so hard to understand really. Don't worry Filipe, I'm sure your mother thinks you are clever.

Meanwhile lets get back to the bloggers with an IQ higher than 70!!!

John A. – I'm not Jewish but had both my sons circumcized at birth. It seems a little painful even at that age, but it was for medical reasons. Infections happen if this step is not taken. That's pretty old knowledge in general if you read the old books. My doc recommended it, and it was a tough decision to make, but probably the best one. My sons are older and I don't regret it. Older, it's worse I guess.

university rector   July 17th, 2009 4:45 pm ET

how stupid can you get to believe in genies?

hahahahahahahaha

Filipe   July 17th, 2009 5:30 pm ET

John A,

Yea right -- Quotation marks mean exactly that-to set off and represent exact language (either spoken or written) that has come from somebody else.

Did you get that clarification from Itai ??? HAaaaaa!!!!!!

Since you appear to need assistance--this may help. You might Itai to help you out though.

G.,

John A is playing the stupid card again. He's been told before it's not strictly a Jewish thing, that it's common throughout the world. But in his own little world circumcision is a barbaric practice performed in the name of religion by a group of fanatics to inflict pain and suffering on babies.

Go Figure !!!

G – I know it sounds ridiculous, but circumcision is also carried performed for religious reasons and not by a doctor, but by a Rabbi.
Circumcision brings you closer to God, now that is as mad as you can get. A ritual which started thousands of years ago and in the most primitive of times, still practiced by those who pretend to be enlightened.

Also G – You think circumcision prevented your sons from gaining future infections. Why? Do they refuse to shower and practice normal hygiene? The idea that circumcision is medically beneficial is as out dated as leeches cleaning the blood or a witch doctor protecting your spirit.

Amazing how the Jewish lobby were the first to jump onto this blog in an attempt to ridicule. Is this a new dimension to Middle East crises, now the Zionist compete with over who can be the most insane.

Here is another insanity to ponder. For generations a certain group of people believed God promised some land to them. As if God is racist and would place one of his creations higher than another. Obviously this is just primitive human tribalism, but some people are still mad enough to believe it. They don’t even understand that when the Jews were in exodus from Egypt, the nearest land in walking distance was Palestine/Israel. In the end we can only assume the baking sun of the Middle East has fried the brains of certain people.

Johan   July 17th, 2009 7:48 pm ET

John A -

What do your weird beliefs have to do with my post? I've never heard about the parting of the dead sea? Is this another thing you made up?

Filipe   July 18th, 2009 1:17 pm ET

John A,

You said " attempt to ridicule"

The subject of the article speaks for itself-– no need for any outside help to ridicule!!!!

A Saudi family is suing a genie in a court of law and the court actually accepts the case !!!!!

Why would this need to be ridiculed by anyone??

Yet you carry on about nonsense totally off topic like circumcision, Zionism, exodus from Egypt, war crimes, burning bushes, parting the dead sea, God promising a land to a chosen people, apartheid, racism, UN, Amnesty International & The Red Cross!!!

Its' about ignorance of a people who believe in a friggin' Genie and a government court of law that accepts it as legal proceeding!!!!

They are wacko!!!!

Get over it !!!! Are you just filled with so much hate and anger you that your blood boils 24/7???

Take your meds and calm!

John A   July 18th, 2009 11:36 pm ET

Circumcision – the child abuse of a baby boys foreskin supposedly helps with religious purity hahahah, God promising a land to a chosen people hahaha,. Some believe all Muslims are inferior hahaha. Sadly some believe these freakish beliefs are worth life and death with constant conflict

Some people even think the UN, Amnesty International & The Red Cross support Hamas when the accuse Israel of war crimes and constant discrimination!!

So Filipe who can judge what is an acceptable belief? You can find non-scientific & weird beliefs in every culture around the world.

Muslim boys are circumcized, did you not know?

not to speak about female circumcision practiced by many Muslims

any comment??

Filipe writes:

And my point is that same people on this blog who judge what is ignorant also beleive : Circumcision brings you closer to God(now that is as mad as you can get). They also beleive the UN, Amnesty International & The Red Cross support Hamas when they accuse Israel of war crimes and constant discrimination (also a mad beleif)

So who is able to judge others of ignorance? Filipe you sound like the blind leading the blind.

Filipe   July 19th, 2009 5:36 pm ET

John A,

The Blog is about Arabs believing in Genies and suing them in a court of law.

Apparently you don't find anything weird about this or you wouldn't be having such a hissy fit about it.

But no-you need to rant and rave about circumcision, the UN, Amnesty International & The Red Cross, Hamas, Israel, war crimes, discrimination, burning bushes, parting the dead sea, God promising a land to a chosen people, apartheid, racism, Muslims are inferior, and Zionists!

Its’ about ignorance of a people who believe in a friggin’ Genie!!!

university rector   July 19th, 2009 8:56 pm ET

John, wake up,

Muslims are circumcized!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Barry   July 20th, 2009 12:05 am ET

John A -

Amnesty International actually accused the PALESTINIANS of being WAR CRIMINALS for constantly attacking Israeli civilians with rockets and mortars. Of course, this just confirmed what the civilized world already knew.

You judge others and tell them they believe that, "Circumcision brings you closer to God," but no one on this blog stated that. What gives you these special powers of knowing the unstated beliefs of others so that you can judge them for it?

Why are you so hung up on circumcision? I'm waiting for you to say that circumcision is a racist, Zionist plot against the Arabs. LOL

University rector   July 20th, 2009 6:35 am ET

john A

you said:

Circumcision brings you closer to God(now that is as mad as you can get).

which means that muslims, who practice circumcision, in your own words, are as mad as you can get?

"Male circumcision is among the rites of Islam and is part of the (in Arabic): fitrah, or the innate disposition and natural character and instinct of the human creation.

As-Shawkani said in his book Nayl al-Awtar (1/184):

"What the Prophet (s.A.w.) means by Fitrah is that if these characteristics are followed by a man, he would be described as a man of Fitrah, which Allah (s.w.t.) has gifted his servants with, and encouraged them to follow, so that they attain a high degree of respectability and dignity."

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "Five are the acts quite akin to fitrah:Circumcision, clipping or shaving the pubes, cutting the nails, plucking or shaving the hair under the armpits and clipping (or shaving) the moustache." (Reported in Bukhari & Muslim)

Allah ordered Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to follow the religion of Ibrahim (peace be upon him). When Allah says:

"Then We inspired you: 'Follow the religion of Ibrahim, the upright in Faith'."

(Qur'an 16:123)

what an interesting admission from your mouth, we finally managed to persuade you !

miriam   July 20th, 2009 9:46 am ET

John A,

Try and look up why it took 40 years to get from Egypt to "the nearest land in walking distance".

John A   July 20th, 2009 3:18 pm ET

University Rector now you equate Muslim practices with Jewish ones. So why do you pretend to be superior? What a joke.

Yes Miriam all cultures do and I suppose you belong to a culture? Again I ask why do Zionists leap onto this blog to ridicule, when you are no better?

G.   July 20th, 2009 10:09 pm ET

John A. – back in the old old history, before we knew to wash our hands much less medical procedures, God probably did tell people who listened just to do circumcisions. Explaining the bacteria thing would have been lost. Now we understand the medical reasons and have them performed, Jewish or not, for the medical benefits. Science catches up.

G.   July 20th, 2009 10:10 pm ET

I didn't know Muslims did circumcisions. Never heard that. I thought it was a Jewish religious thing. Or for the west, a medical preventive operation. Is that true?

miriam   July 21st, 2009 8:35 am ET

University rector   July 21st, 2009 10:21 am ET

look it up, the muslims do it to their sons, just like the jews, only usually at a much later age (when they can recite the Koran, i.e. at about puberty), while jewish boys are circumcized at age 8 days

In addition many muslims cicumsize the baby girls, a babarian practice by all accounts.

but don't take my word for it, look it up

The trip from Egypt to Canaan by camel, not by car, takes a maximum of about two weeks. Yet it took the Jews forty years. Why the big delay? (3rd paragraph #2)

You people are tremendously sad.

G.   July 22nd, 2009 1:28 pm ET

John A – I don't really give a hoot what anyone calls God as long as they call him something. I think that back in the old times, in the old writings, God did tell people to remove the foreskin. It prevented infection though God didn't mention that part because people were too ignorant, not enough knowledge about bacteria or viruses to understand infections. We thought we'd fall off of a flat world, if we thought at all. We still use the term germs a lot, though that's a funny general term. What are germs? Bacteria and viruses. So now some of us modern people have the foreskin removed to prevent infection while the child is a baby. Is it cruel? Not to me, it's a preventative approach in the world of medicine. Is it religious – not at all. I'm glad we know, and God told us a long time ago before docs figured it out, but it was strictly a med procedure to me.

John A   July 23rd, 2009 10:56 am ET

university rector.
If you really had any education you would realize that both Mexico and America agreed a peace settlement and new boarders after a war.
Britain also relinquished sovereignty of America after a war. These were the terms & conditions of a peace settlement.

Palestine has not surrendered to the occupation of its land by Israel. The world waits for a peace settlement, but Israel will not compromise. Instead Israel continues to expand with illegal settlements. This makes the situation worse and less likely that peace can be agreed. In fact Israel has never been at peace. Since its creation it has continuously expanded, even though the war was supposed to have finished many decades ago. Therefore there is no peace and no agreement. Therefore your comparison with Mexico and LA is rather silly.

Filipe   July 23rd, 2009 2:04 pm ET

John A,

Why do you think that Great Britain had any right to the land to begin with??? It wasn't theirs to give away--was it?? Didn't it all belong to the Native Americans ??? The Europeans moving west to take land from Mexico should never have happened to begin with -– since they had no right to the original land in the colonies. Right ??

Your attempt to justify the European settlement in North America is baseless-- the Europeans never ever had any right to the land, they never lived there, their ancestors never lived their, they simply moved in and took over.

However, everyone on the planet is aware of the the fact that the Jews have lived in Israel for several millenia. So no comparison can be made.

As far as the a peace settlement in Israel and the Palestinian territories goes-– A settlement was reached between Egypt and Israel, which led to the transfer of Gaza fro egyptian control to Israeli control. A settlement was also reached between Israel and Jordan, which resulted in the West bank and East Jerusalem being transferred from Jordanian control to Israeli control.

Since there never was and never has been a sovereign state of Palestine, it makes it rather difficult to sign a peace agreement with an entity that doesn't really exist. Who is it that Israel is supposed sign a peace deal with ??? Even the Palestinians can't agree on this, as demonstrated by recent break down of talks in Egypt between the PA and Hamas.

And you -"but Israel will not compromise" ! So What !!!! That's the way it goes when you win. You get to dictate the terms!!! Life is not fair !!! The winner takes all-if they so choose !!! The Palestinians should wake up to the fact they've lost ground in each and every conflict with Israel for 61 years. Stop the slobbering, whining crying and complaining-- they'll get what Israel decides to give them!

The sad part is--they could have had what the UN gave them 61 years ago-- which was far more than they will ever see from Israel.

G.   July 23rd, 2009 2:04 pm ET

Does this sound really silly to anyone else? I wonder. Having a government ran by "religious clerics" who hire thugs does seem wrong. Beating, imprisoning, killing must be wrong to a country's own people, much less anyone with a different religion. No wonder we have so many atheist. Gives religion a bad name. Having none, like N. Korea is about as bad. I have them together in my mind. Bad places.

Then I ask myself, if that is where they are, so be it. Everything is God's choce anyway. In the U.S. we all learn, female and guys, and try to find God. We have many beliefs. They all seems to be pieces of the puzzle. That probably scares people. I pray a lot. Not in some show at a certain time of day, but in general. Many times. Even Christians are intolerant. I find that odd too. How do we learn to learn from each other without blowing each other up?

People aren't that smart. It won't happen. Sadly. We still fear and kill each other. It will happen for awhile. I don't know how long. A few decades at least. Oh well.

your latest post is rather silly. If you really had any education you would realize that it was the arabs who refused the two state solution, that it was the arabs who refused to stick to the rhodes agreement that they signed which calls for determination of the borders by negotiations, that it was the arabs who after the 6 day war refused isarel's offer to negotiate with the three "nos" of khartoum, that it is the arabs who refuse all and any offers made by israel, that it is the arabs who state over and over again: no compromise, either all we demand or no peace

your ignorance cannot be ignored just because you use hamas retoric, ignorami disappear, but israel will live on, as you know

John A,

There has never been a Palestine with its own land.
Mandatory Palestine belonged to the British who gave most of it to the Hashemites from Arabia to create Jordan.

The Arabs rejected, repeatedly, the offer of another Arab state in what remained of the Mandate since that was less important than the annihilation of the proposed, and then existant, Jewish State.

Israel has been prepared to compromise in every peace conference and has indeed done so. Consequently, she has not continually expanded and has in fact given up more territory than any other party.

muslims practice cicumcision

you are obviously too scared to reply to this fact

John A   July 24th, 2009 4:50 pm ET

Rector, I never claimed weird beliefs are exclusive to Zionists. I merely show the Zionists who were the first to make entries on this blog page; their ridicule can easily and justifiably be redirected at them.

Healthy minded people don’t think in terms of them and us, we must try to be inclusive. So why would you think I’m scared to reply? It’s not about Arabs against the Jews or Jews against Arabs. It’s about recognizing that Palestinians are no less valuable than Jews.

If you disagree, take it up with your God the creator.

John A,

You said--" It’s not about Arabs against the Jews or Jews against Arabs. It’s about recognizing that Palestinians are no less valuable than Jews."

********************************************************************

Really !!!!! When I read the article it had nothing whatsoever to do with Palestinians or Jews !!

This blog is about some ignorant Saudi family suing a genie in a court of law!!!

And you start of on as tirade about circumcision !!!

Immediately attempting to take the discussion off-topic by a ridiculing a Jewish religious tradition.

So what does circumcision have to with it ??

And the you digress to ranting and raving about nonsense totally off topic like Zionism, exodus from Egypt, war crimes, burning bushes, parting the dead sea, God promising a land to a chosen people, apartheid, racism, UN, Amnesty International & The Red Cross!!!

This blog has nothing to do with Palestinians !!!! Why does everything in Middle East need to be twisted around to be about the Palestinians?

Filipe   July 25th, 2009 6:30 pm ET

NEWS FLASH !!!!!!

The High Court of Saudi Arabia just convicted the Genie of 72 counts of Terrorism !!!

The Saudi High Court sentenced the Genie to Eternity in the Bottle! The Bottle is to be encapsulated in concrete, taken to the ocean and dumped overboard in the deepest part none to man.

I'm sure the terrorized Saudi family will sleep well tonight !!!!

Allah Akbar!!!
