(CNN) - A day after Israeli forces stormed a flotilla carrying humanitarian supplies in a fatal raid, independent information on what transpired remained scant Tuesday.

The death toll of nine killed came from the Israelis, who did not release the names of those who died.

The Free Gaza Movement, one of the groups that organized the convoy of ships, said the fatalities numbered higher, but did not offer an exact number.

The surviving passengers themselves were being held incommunicado by Israeli authorities.

Of the foreigners who were taken into custody, none have been placed under arrest, the Israeli police said Tuesday.

The foreigners who have identified themselves were being taken to Ben Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv to be flown back to their native countries, police said.

Those who have refused to identify themselves to Israeli immigration authorities have been transferred to a prison in Beer Sheva in southern Israel where they are being temporarily held as they undergo security checks, police said.

A police spokesman said that the process involved in deporting these latter protesters is more complicated as it requires the involvement of foreign diplomats.

Early Tuesday morning, the U.N. Security Council said it regretted the loss of lives on the humanitarian flotilla bound for Gaza and condemned the actions that led to the deaths.

"The Security Council deeply regrets the loss of life and injuries resulting from the use of force during the Israeli military operation in international waters against the convoy sailing to Gaza," the council said in a statement. "The council in this context condemns those acts which resulted in the loss of at least 10 civilians and expresses condolences to the families."

The 15 member-nations of the council requested the immediate release of the seized ships that made up the flotilla, as well as the civilians who were taken into custody following the raid.

And it called for a "prompt, impartial, credible and transparent" investigation into the incident. Read full story and Q&A on Israel's Gaza blockade.

Where is Turkey's responsibility? They let the flotilla use harbours in turkish-occupied Cyprus, knowing the Israelis had invited the flotilla to unload the cargo in Ashdod.
If I were to fly in supplies to a kurdish village in Anatolia, would they let me?
Isn't this in reality a "Turkish Reichstags-fire" to shift the focus from their massacres during the past on Greek, Armenians and Kurds?

Nelson McT   June 1st, 2010 10:17 am ET

There is indeed a lack of information from both sides. The leaders of the Turk-based armada called this an aid mission but there is no information as to what they were bringing or what might now happen to the cargo, if there was any. What was the mission of the armada? if it was simply to be disruptive, that is mission accomplished. If there was a higher purpose, that is obscure.

If this happened in South America, for example, few would pay attention. But with Israel involved, it takes on Biblical proportions.

Israel attacks in international waters

Israel kills civilians

Israel silences the survivors from speaking to the press

Israel fails to release the entire film of the event

Israel confiscates all evidence from the crime scene

US News reporters fail to ask why the survivors are being hidden

The American people need to take their government back.

The first step is for Americans to take their media back!

ps last week the news broke that the torpedo which hit the S.Korean ship was made in Germany. Germany only sells its weapons to NATO & Israel. But now everyone forgets this story due to the conveniently timed scandal and murder of peace activists.

John A   June 1st, 2010 11:49 am ET

AagePK, Illegal immigrants poor across boarders all over Europe and the US. When do you here of them being shot by police to prevent illegal entry.

Mario   June 1st, 2010 12:05 pm ET

To fly in supplies into Turkey is not the same as being in International waters or Gaza which is not Israel. AagePK next time try to make analogies that make sense.

It was a criminal act of piracy and banditry pure and simple!

miriam   June 1st, 2010 12:18 pm ET

CNN,

Is it not obvious that Israel only releases information when it has been confirmed and validated, something that seems to have been forgotten by the so-called honest media which long ago lost its ability to report independently and instead now depends on its competitor, the entirely unreliable and non-confimed social media?

There cannot be any independent information since those involved and witness to events were on two opposing sides!

Information to serve the instant gratification needs of the modern impatient society cannot be accurate and immediate and therefore most stories that people hear first are rumours and myths.

When actvists are still being escorted off the boat and many refusing to identify themselves, it is impossible for the world to know who they are.
Similarly, corpses, who along with the other passengers dumped their passports together so as to make their identification difficult, also don't reveal who they are instantly.

All this along with their other activities is evidence of provocation rather that anything resembling humanitarianism.

miriam   June 1st, 2010 12:53 pm ET

John A,

Under international maritime law it is legal to prevent any boat deliberately intent on breaking a naval blockade while it is still in international waters.

Under international law, any "civilian" who takes up arms to attack an enemy is no longer a civilian but becomes a combatant.

There is no requirement for the press to interview protesters caught engaging in illegal activity while they are still disembarking and being processed.

Israel has no obligation to release footage at the instant demand of those who only dismiss it as fake or explain it falsely, especially before it has been analysed by her own committee of specialist investigators.

Who says any evidence has been cleared?
And since when does every conflict in the world leave evidence exposed to the elements for months while the Arab and NA nations pressurize the UN to create some biased committee to find only the evidence that fits their biased mandate?
And at the same time demand the immediate release of the boats!

The US citizens elected their government. It's too bad if most of them don't fall for the myths, lies and conspiracies that you do.

The media already does an excellent job at deceiving world leaders around the world. In some places it does a good job at spreading the dictactorship's lies. It's time they acted responsibly and honestly and stopped behaving like Big Brother.

miriam   June 1st, 2010 12:56 pm ET

You have forgotten that Hamas is a terrorist organization which is intent on destroying Israel, is at war with Israel and oppresses its own citizens in Gaza.

miriam   June 1st, 2010 1:10 pm ET

John A,

Europe has open borders and many illegal immigrants are killed before they even make it to Europe.

US border patrols are allowed to use lethal force against illegal immigrants carrying rocks.

The US Commander's Handbook on the Law of Naval Operations allows interception and attack on ships intent on breaking a naval blockade from the time it leaves port.

Although you do not mention Arab or African borders, the Egyptians almost daily shoot and kill African illegal immigrant attempting to cross into israel.,

Anonymous Friend   June 1st, 2010 2:54 pm ET

Miriam Sorry, but JUDAISM IS NOT ZIONISM. Criticising the secular state of Israel does not make you a “Jew hater”, nor does loving the state make you a “Jew lover”. Most of the love Israel gets around the world has very little to do the populace being “Jews” and more to do with politics.

To criticise Israel is NOT to criticise Judaism, anymore than it is to criticise the US is to criticise Christianity. It’s an absurd notion, that rests ultimately on a false notion that the modern state of Israel is thew centre of all that it is to be “Jewish”.

Carry on your propaganda campaigns though, you’re ultimately failing as we’re witnessing.

Captain America   June 1st, 2010 2:56 pm ET

It’s Israel against the whole world. Their only support is from their “owned” operatives in the US government. The US governments position no longer represents the sentiment of it’s citizens.
Undue Zionist influence should be removed from our government military and media. Israel should be treated as is merited by their behavior. If they are breaking laws our government shouldn’t be giving them blanket approval of it’s actions.

In what could be a serious blow to Israel’s narrative on the killing of at least nine humanitarian activists making their way to Gaza through international waters, raw video by an Al Jazeera producer, who was filming during the raid, appears to provide evidence that the IDF opened fire on the flotilla even before boarding it

Zolta   June 1st, 2010 3:01 pm ET

Turkish sources and media revealed a document which shows that a death list had been prepared in advance by the Israelis, showing names and pictures of people on board of the ships to be murdered, who, according to Israel, were “involved in the International humanitarian aid for Gaza”. According to the Turkish sources, hundreds of Israeli soldiers stormed the blue Turkish ship “Marmara” flotilla and they had copies of the death list. The list included the names of civilians on the fleet who should be killed”. The document was apparently recovered after one of the Israeli soldiers lost it during the piracy act.

“The organizers are telling me now, they are raising a white flag — they are raising a white flag to the Israeli army,” the Al Jazeera reporter said. “This is after one person has been killed; a civilian has been killed by munition. This will only get the muslim fundementalists to attack Israel and then we will see Iran being attacked. the people of america and the rest of the world should be telling their governments that enough is enough and give israel a dose of their own medicine by stopping all trade and supplying this warmongering scum with arms.

Israel has no right to control Gaza’s sea as its own territorial waters and to stop aid convoys arriving that way. In doing so, it proves that it is still in belligerent occupation of the enclave and its 1.5 million inhabitants. And if it is occupying Gaza, then under international law Israel is responsible for the welfare of the Strip’s inhabitants. Given that the blockade has put Palestinians there on a starvation diet for the past four years, Israel should long ago have been in the dock for committing a crime against humanity.

Does Israel claim all the territorial waters off Gaza? Typically people have a “right of way” for accessing their property. Would anyone here buy a piece of property and then have no way of accessing it? It’s very clear Israel has broken many international laws in this incidence. More war crimes to throw on top of all the other war crimes they have committed. And what is our governments positiion in regards to all this law breaking? It gives them full support. Last I knew when you were aiding and abetting criminal activity you yourself became part of the crime.
Our government is nothing more than a bunch of law breaking criminals that scoff at the laws they expect us citizens to obey.

The triumph of hypocrisy?
The agony of the free world?
Adopting Islamism methods – the way ahead?
I can't decide what should be the proper title-could it be the all 3?
What issues are to be considered?
1:"Freedom activist" are called the supporters of the ideology stating that:
All cultures can leave peacefully only governed by Islam and Sharia low
All lands once conquered by Islam are Muslim territory forever and should be re conquered (From :Paris gates to Morocco- Vienna gates to Istanbul- All India- Sicily and part of south Italy)
Human rights and democracy should be destroyed
Keel all Jews
2: "Not punished"- their war methods- not included in the international war laws:
Islamist hate propaganda
Terrorist dressed as civilians
Countries supporting and sheltering terrorism
Killing everywhere and everyone
Shelling indiscriminately civilian areas
Firing and hinting between civilians
3: Freedom defenders– "Punished" tying to defend their nation–
Uniform dressed solders acting to stop terrorists hiding in civilian areas
Soldiers defending their lives against terrorists masked as "freedom activists"
Closing supply logistic channels to areas controlled by terrorist and supporters
Acting against countries sheltering terror infrastructure
** * To survive on this hostile and hypocritical environment what is the way forward?

Dear cnn

Next time you interview the Israeli ambassador (enough of him already!) can you please ask him to remove the American pin flag off his chest... He is disgracing our Country. Using Automatic weapons shooting on unarmed civilian activists on International waters, is not what we stand for.

No one is buying his BS about self defense.

miriam   June 1st, 2010 5:29 pm ET

Unbelievable hate, lies and disinformation seen here is encouraged by the biased and uninformed media.

Anyone who believes the Arab/Turkish media or the western media who get their stories from liars on social media is simply fooled.

Al Jazeera reporters on the boat do not know how to distinguish between weapons and flares and ignore the raw footage streamed live showing the brutal attacks on the commandos before they even hit the ground.

You won't see on such channels any of the footage that shows the real story and if you did, it would not change the opinions of those who are rejoicing at the hijacking of the world by Islamist terrorists.

Israel had no "list " of passengers and it is becoming increasingly clear that there were a large numbers of al Qaeda affiliated terrorist who were organized and prepared for a provocative, violent attack.

Delegitimizing Israel with lies, myths and disinformation along with rediculous claims accusing Israel of every crisis in the world is a sign of weakness and probably madness..

I am so tired of my religion getting bashed for everything in this world. I am a Jew and proud of it. The Christians think we are going to sacrifice ourselves so they can live is a joke. Catholics have sinned against humanity more than any other group of people. The holier then thou Pope did absolutely nothing when 5-6 million Jews were killled by the Germans. Was God directly telling the Pope not to do anything so his descendents should be exterminated. I dont think so. The holy church has pushed its views on the world with malice and ill intent. Pedophelia, rape ,abuse has run rampant in the church and has been covered up. The Arab nations want to push Israel into the sea. Their children arec taught to hate Jews from birth. Islam is a joke. Like many religions it was formed to keep the people in line so they did what they were told. The time will soon come when its the Jews that will rise up and beat down our enemies. We as a people are getting stronger physically and mentally. The tables will turn, and it will be in the near future. We wont hide behind masks, we will openly defeat those who have tried to wipe us out. This a new generation of Jews that are willing to go the distance and give back to those that have done evil to us. Mark my words, we have just begun to defend ourselves. Print this instead of the fluff that is put in our news agencys hands.Lets see if you really want to tell the truth what Jews are thinking. The true day of reckoning will be upon us soon. There is no hiding.

Anonymous friend,

If your reasoning was correct, why does every other country faced with any threat respond with far greater force, exacting far more casualties and no comment from most of the world?

Nations travel half way around the world to protect their citizens but Israel, who is fighting on her borders attracts immediate condemnation and emergency UN sessions.

Nations are committing real genocides and massacres in their borders and there's barely a mention in the media.

Innocent civilians are killed everyday in war zones and it is only Israel who is singled out for disproportionate criticism.

No wonder terrorist groups can use the false claims of a Gazan humanitarian disaster to execute attacks on Israel and get the backing of the irrational world.

You are wrong.
Anti-Zionism is nothing other than anti-Judaism/semitism, which peaks in every generation, just as vile, just as baseless, leaving the next generation having to figure out why their parents were pulled so blindly to join the masses.

Turkey is absolutely correct: there should be an independent investigation about the incident of the flotilla. But, it should be held only after Turkey agrees to an independent investigation of the Armenian Massacre and Turkey's suppression and destruction of the Kurds. The leaders of the Flotilla should be able to deliver supplies to Gaza but only after they obtain Hamas' agreement to revoke its Covenant to destroy the State of Israel. It's amazing to see the self-righteousness of people with blood on their hands and those of their allies. I don't remember any of these libertarians coming to the aide of the new State of Israel when it was unprovokedly attacked by the massive armies of its neighbors.

There is no atrocity some defenders of Israel wouldn't justify...It's a mental illness!

Smith in Oregon   June 2nd, 2010 3:51 am ET

The heavily edited night-scope Video released by the Israeli Defense Force which is highly biased in favor of this illegal act of Piracy in International Waters showed Commando's with M4 machine guns equipped with M203 grenade launchers and on the Audio you can hear a FULL CLIP fired in a single burst by one of the M4's.

The rounds fired were entirely lethal full metal jacket 5.56mm issue, not rubber bullets. The 'notion' the Israeli Commando's didn't have nor plan on using lethal force against the unarmed Peace Flotilla Passengers is BS, a fantasy which holds no water whatsoever.

Non-Israeli witness's also stated they saw only TWO wooden batons that TWO passengers used to defend themselves from the Israeli attackers. There is NO Israeli photos of any weapons, no knives, no metal rods, only a single photo of a crude hand made sling-shot as being found and recovered.

When the witness's of the Israeli attack are finally released from the Israeli prisons where they are currently housed, they'll likely fill in more of what actually occurred. Israel will likely keep them languishing in their prison system for as many years as it takes for this story to die down unless Turkey appeals to Interpol to press criminal piracy charges against Israel and forces Israel to release those witness's to what actually took place.

The Turkish Captain was also shot by the Israeli attackers, likely by a full automatic burst into the wheel house.

This was a act of terrorism in International Waters, the theft of hundreds of ton's of food and medical supply's and the civilian deaths indicate this was entirely an act of piracy against the Gaza Peace Flotilla passengers and should be treated as such by Interpol.

I hope Turkey severs it's ties with Israel and orders America to either entirely condemn Israel for this act of terrorism and piracy in International Waters OR Turkey will sever its contract with America which allows America to move its US Military fuel supplies thru Turkey to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Smith in Oregon   June 2nd, 2010 4:36 am ET

Wow, apparently the Gaza Peace Flotilla humanitarian organizers were marked for death days before even reaching their scheduled destination. Photo's of the Israeli Commando's hit list which included the photos and names of the passengers to be murdered was allegedly obtained in the scuffle among the peace protesters and the Israeli Commando's and one of the photos of that hit list released on the internet on several locations appear to verify the fact that the Israeli Commando operation was a cover to murder the key organizers of the Peace Flotilla humanitarian operation who were passengers on the Turkish flag ship leading the flotilla.

Perhaps independent news agency's can follow-up on this information and look into the authenticity of the document which appears to be the smoking gun and a genuine article.

Dean   June 2nd, 2010 6:14 am ET

Living as a young white male with the legacy of apartheid and the persecution of black people in South Africa I can only see more challenges and suffering for the Jewish nation if they persevere with avoiding the basic tenet that all humans, irrespective of creed, culture or religion, deserve the right to life, liberty and security of person. The Jewish nation has an undeniable right to security but so have the 'humans' that share the same land and breathe the same air.

Smith in Oregon   June 2nd, 2010 7:28 am ET

I find it very troubling how swiftly the alleged Israeli Commando's hit list was published on various Internet websites which shows the photos and names of the Gaza Peace Food flotilla organizers who were civilian passengers that were apparently murdered.

It is plausible and possible for a Islamic extremist organization to obtain the photos and names of those involved given several weeks or a month AFTER the incident took place. HOWEVER it is extremely unlikely this document would be created when it was utterly unknown who and how many were killed. And this alleged hit list said to have been taken from one of the Israeli Commando's during the midnight raid surfaced almost immediately.

I find it very troubling and feel that a line has been crossed by Israel which is utterly and totally condemnable.

Perhaps this will further pressure Interpol to charge those Israeli's responsible with International criminal charges.

Perhaps this will pressure Turkey to rethink its open door policy with America in allowing enormous US Military supplies to travel thru Turkey and Turkey's future relationship with Israel.

This Israeli Commando midnight raid on a civilian flotilla in International Waters could force America to redirect Israel or face a significant chill in American and Israeli relations.

Norman Paech, a former member of Germany's parliment, was aboard the Mavi Marmara, the largest of the six ships in the convoy.

Speaking at a news conference in Berlin, he said the ship was surrounded by small Israeli assault boats on Monday morning at about 0430 local time.

"Moments later, we heard detonations and then soldiers from helicopters above us dropped down on board.

"The soldiers were all masked, carrying big guns and were extremely brutal."

Mr Paech said he only saw three activists resisting.

"They had no knives, no axes, only sticks that they used to defend themselves," he told reporters.

But he said he could "not rule out" that others used weapons somewhere else on the boat.

Turkish activist Nilufer Cetin told reporters she hid with her baby in the bathroom of her cabin aboard the Mavi Marmara.

"When the Mavi Marmara continued on its course, the harassment [from Israeli ships] turned into an attack," she said.

"They used smoke bombs followed by gas canisters. They started to descend onto the ship with helicopters.

"It [the violence] was extremely bad and brutal. The ship turned into a lake of blood.

"I was one of the first victims to be released because I had a child. They confiscated everything, our telephones, laptops are all gone.

"We were aware of the possible danger [in joining the trip] but there are thousands of babies in Gaza. If we had reached Gaza we would have played with them and taken them food."

I'm Irish and my government has issued a warning to Israel. More boats are on the way to Gaza and they carry many good Irish people.

The Irish government has told Israel not to stop Irish citizens freedom of movement.. Irelands prime minister also warns that if Israeli soldiers open fire on any Irish citizens there will be serious consequences.

If Israel starts to kill Irish citizens, then I'm afraid the IRA may enter into "special negotiations" with AIPAC. Such negotiations will be based on the principles of an eye for an eye.

when you are hiding with a baby, there is no way you can witness events.

Most "eye-witness" accounts did not see the action, and admit that there were those on board who were planning and prepared for violent resistance.

Anyone following the 24/7 footage before the event heard and saw the incitement and statements about massacring the Jews and the honour of martyrdom.
However, the other passengers did not understand Turkish or Arabic and were naively unaware of the real intentions of some.

Tabby what happened is horrible, but the international community is not silent. The problem is American news channels only report a fraction of the international outrage. Fox news doesn't want to upset their Jewsih paymasters.

The result is Americans who depend on TV news have little information about whats really happening. Sweden, Britain, Ireland, Greece etc .. All countries furious with Israels latest murders.

But American leaders are $hitting their pants as Turkey may withdraw use of airports which currently supply Americas trops which fight for the neocon dream of crusading in Iran & Iraq.

Smith in Oregon   June 2nd, 2010 5:18 pm ET

Turkey is reporting they'll escort the Gaza Aid ships with their own warships. Perhaps some might remember the recent brokered Uranium swap for Fuel Rods between Brazil, Turkey and Iran to help defuse the stand-off over Iran's enriched Uranium holdings.

This heavy handed action by the Israeli Commando's and Israeli navy soldiers on dozens of zodiac's that surrounded the flotilla and repeatedly opened fire on the ships APPEARS to directly be a brutal push back to Turkey over its part and efforts in defusing the Iranian enriched Uranium deal.

I am very concerned that Israel has blurred the lines between cooperative nations such as Turkey and those they perceive as enemy's that wish them ill.

If Israel attacks Turkish warships escorting the Gaza Food and Medical Supply flotillas that will certainly fracture NATO as that would directly violate the NATO treaty and likely result in the closure of Turkey's airspace for America and Israeli US Military aircraft and likely result in the closure of Turkey's territory for the US Military transports.

Netanyahu is trying to spin hospital beds, wheel chairs and ten thousand tons of FOOD as weapons from Hamas to Gaza terrorists. That simply is not going to fly whatsoever. The number of peace protesters wounded has been estimated as high as 50, such likely won't be accurately known by independent sources for some time as a number of the passengers on the Turkish cargo flag ship are isolated in Israeli prisons.

Mario   June 2nd, 2010 6:20 pm ET

The UN Security Council has already pronounced against the blockade of GAZA in UNSCR 1860. As a result the criminal activity by the Israeli Government on the high seas can only be called psychopaths in action.
As to the legal position, it is quite clear that to attack a foreign flagged vessel in international waters is illegal. It is not piracy, as the Israeli vessels carried a military commission. It is rather an act of illegal warfare.
Because the incident took place on the high seas does not mean however that international law is the only applicable law. The Law of the Sea is quite plain that, when an incident takes place
on a ship on the high seas (outside anybody's territorial waters) the applicable law is that of the flag state of the ship on which the incident occurred. In legal terms, the Turkish ship was Turkish territory.
Therefore, if the Israeli commandos were acting on behalf of the government of Israel in killing the activists on the ships. In that case Israel is in a position of war with Turkey, and the act falls under international jurisdiction as a war crime.
As a Nato member, Turkey can expect military support from other member states including the USA as the Nato Charter calls for an attack on one is an attack on all.
In brief, if Israel and Turkey are not at war, then it is Turkish law which is applicable to what happened on the ship. It is for Turkey, not Israel, to carry out any inquiry or investigation into events and to initiate any prosecutions. Israel is obliged to hand over indicted personnel for prosecution.

Israel remains a bad country and to claim other also murder is a lunatic defense.

Smith, mario and Sasha,

Turkey would not be able, as a NATO member, to attempt to break a legal blockade.

Despite all the political rhetoric, Israel's actions are all legal under international maritime law, and the Law of the Sea is not applicable to conflict zones.

Turkey, along with Iran and many other Islamic and non-alligned states are rapidly making a joke out of international organizations, turning the world up-side down and harming the rights and needs of those in the world who are really suffering.

Heidi,

Your 3 visits must have been tightly controlled.

You obviously didn't walk the streets of Jerusalem or visit its hospitals, driving centres, malls, parks.

You also didn't get caught up in a suicide bombing, bulldozer attack or shooting at a school.

You obviously didn't spend any time in Sderot, Ashkelon, Nir Am, Netiv Ha'asarah, or if you did, perhaps you didn't notice since their populations were hidden in shelters wondering why the world insists their lives have to stop.

Did you visit the WB or Gaza between 1948 and 1967? It would be interesting to compare.

Did you visit the Jewish communities of Gaza, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq or Saudia Arabia?

Did you visit Gilad Shalit?

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton today met with the family of an American Teenager 19 years old that was machine gunned to death on one of the Humanitarian Flotilla civilian ships carrying hospital beds, medical supply's and 100 tons of food for the Gaza people.

Another American citizen lost his eye after a Israeli Commando pointed his machine gun at him and fired a tear gas grenade in his face by the M203 Grenade launcher connected beneath the M4 Machine Gun he was using.

It appears that Israel has declared war on Turkey after Turkey worked long hours in a urgent humanitarian fashion to defuse the ramped up Iranian enriched Uranium crisis by brokering a deal with Brazil and Iran to swap out its slightly enriched Uranium stocks for fuel rods from Brazil to power Iran's medical reactor.

Turkey should now accept that Israel see's Turkey as it's enemy and close Turkey's airspace to Israel, warn America that any further clashes will result in Turkey closing it's borders to the American US Military convoys and make arrangements with Russia for advanced anti-aircraft missile defenses against possible Israeli fighter bombings.

The Irish IRA is warning Israel it will begin targeting Jewish citizens in the UK and America if any of its Irish citizens on the peace flotillas are harmed, shot or murdered.

Smith in Oregon   June 4th, 2010 8:33 am ET

@ miriam, the legality to which you refer to can only occur if Two States are at war with one another. AND even when that exists, the response must be proportional to be legal.

1) Gaza is not recognized as a State by Israel, that alone makes interception of those ships in International Waters piracy and Illegal.

2) Hamas is not a State, nor does it compose all of the Gaza people, that makes the claim by Israel mute.

3) Hundreds of armed Israeli Sailors, and an assault team armed with M4 machine guns with M203 grenade launchers which were used to spray hundreds of 5.56mm rifle rounds onto the decks of the cargo and passenger ships resulting in the wounding of up to 50 unarmed civilians and the deaths of 10 passengers is in no fashion a proportionate response to two wooden batons and several deck chairs. This again fails the International Law of proportional response making this action a International Crime.

The Stun Grenade? Appears to have been thrown by one of the Israeli Commando's and was kicked off the ship, landing on one of the Israeli assault zodiacs down in the water. I'm sure that Commando was chewed out later by his own fellow soldiers.

Francesca   June 4th, 2010 9:09 am ET

An international children's rights charity has said it has evidence that Palestinian children held in Israeli custody have been subjected to sexual abuse in an effort to extract confessions from them.

Bana Shoughry-Badarne, head of the legal department at the Public Committee Against Torture in Israel, an Israeli human-rights group, says there is a huge issue of impunity in Israel with regard to complaints against the security services.

"Our latest report, from 2009, shows that from the 600 complaints that were submitted to Israel's attorney-general, all of them were dismissed,"

"There was not even one criminal investigation."

You don't care that Gilead Shalit has been held incommunicado for four years while Palestinian convicted murderers in israeli jails are allowed time in bed with their wives. Why should you care, Pal terrorists are more important bthan dead Jes to you, right HEIDI

Smith in Oregon   June 4th, 2010 9:52 pm ET

@ miriam, It is also a International Crime to cover-up a existing probable crime scene.

The Israeli Defense workers hijacked the Gaza Humanitarian Flotilla passenger and cargo ships and once in Israeli ports, they removed the evidence of their previous crimes.

Removing the hundreds of machine gun shell casings, paint balls with glass shards in them, destroying cameras and cell phones which filmed some of the International Crimes as they took place on those civilian ships.

At least 5 of the 10 civilians murdered were shot once in the back of the head. Forensic examiners have determined at least one of the executed civilians was shot by a machine gun a mere 2 centimeters from that man's skull, point blank. The man was either kneeling or was face down and then EXECUTED by the Israeli Commando.

Packing glass shards into paint balls is really a sick and deviant way for crowd control. Directly reported as leaving horrific flesh wounds which would be nearly impossible to locate glass shards that migrated under the flesh by Xrays leaving a life filled with pain. Those shot in the face, chest, arms or scalp would have flooded the decks with blood which apparently was the point.

However, that ploy didn't work, the assault on the sides of the ships failed and the Israeli Commando's resorted to their heavily armed assault team carrying M4 machine guns with the M203 grenade launcher slung underneath which they used to rake the ships and passengers with lethal 5.56mm rifle rounds.

NONE of this appears to be a proportional response, again that alone is a International Crime.

The International Crimes Appear to be:

Piracy, Kidnapping, Theft of Cargo, Murder, Liability for Deaths, Loss of Limbs and Eyes, Non-Proportional Armed Response, Covering up and Removing crime scene evidence.

Kamal   June 5th, 2010 5:38 am ET

In order to understand the present, one must understand the past. Who lived on that land before the state of Israel was born in 1948? Who lost their lands and the lands of their fathers for generations to an oppressive occupier? What would you do if you had to live in a state of occupation and humiliation as a second class citizen on what was once you own land? Who insists on a settlement policy that amounts to an illegal land grab and is clearly against international law? Who is in voilation of several UN resolutions? I could go on and on, but, sadly, it will make no difference.

Smith in Oregon   June 5th, 2010 8:14 am ET

One of the peace activists said that he witnessed some of the killings, and confirmed that at least "one person was shot through the top of the head from the hovering Israeli Commando helicopter above before it ever dropped off the Israeli Commando's.

This appears to confirm what other peace activists have reported and stated that Israeli Commando's opened fire with their machine guns and used lethal rounds from the hovering HELICOPTER before even boarding the ships. This totally exposes the Israeli version of firing their machine guns on the peace activists in self-defense to be absolutely false and an outrageous lie.

The Turkish forensic medical examiners should be able to determine if any of those murdered had entry wounds thru the top of their heads which would absolutely indicate a International Crime of murder took place on those vessels by the Israeli Commando's.

An Israeli activist on the French cargo ship reported that he asked the soldiers to take away the injured for medical treatment, but they did not, they simply left them bleeding on the deck and the injured later died on the ship.

Interpol Should be notified and pressured to press International Criminal Murder Charges against the Israeli Commando's and Israeli Officials involved in the murders and bloodbath of the peace activists on the Humanitarian Food Supply Flotilla for Gaza.

The International Crimes Appear to be:

Piracy, Kidnapping, Theft of Cargo, Torture, Murder, Liability for Deaths, Loss of Limbs and Eyes, Non-Proportional Armed Response, Covering up and Removing crime scene evidence.

*** We have all seen Israels edited videos of the aid workers repeatedly striking Israeli soldiers, when Israel raided a boat in international waters.

*** We have all witnessed Israels claims that the aid workers were armed with knifes and axes.

Hang on and think about it!!!

If aid workers had time to repeatedly strike Israeli soldiers (as the the video suggests) and they were armed with knifes and axes, then Israeli soldiers would have been repeatedly stabbed resulting in loss of eyes, fingers, ears and lives.

If Israeli soldiers had any such injuries they would have paraded them in front of the media to justify their actions.

In the land of miracles, Israeli soldiers can be repeatedly hit with knifes and axes while on the ground and surrounded by a mob. But no Israeli will suffer serious injury.

More myths!

There were no machine guns, unless they were used by the Turks.

When did Clinton make her secret trip to Turkey to meet the family of the Turkish-American mercenary?!

Most on board did not witness anything since the mercenaries had forced them to the lower levels and the first thing they saw were IDF soldiers being slung over the bannisters or dragged down the stairs.

If you mistakenly believe that Israel controls Gaza, then she has the right to control the entry of all goods into Gaza and also has the responsibility to restore law and order to the territory.

However, Israel disengaged from Gaza but the previous agreement with the PA that requires Israel to retain control over air and sea space is still in place, since Israel handed the terrirtory over to PA control.Hamas's violent and illegal takeover of Gaza does not cancel the agreement.

miriam   June 8th, 2010 5:41 am ET

Yusil,

Hamas has a charter calling for the destruction of Israel and the Jews yet it is Israel who is accused of genocide by the militant humanitarian supporters of Hamas.

Hamas ruthlessly discriminates against Fatah, gays, Christians, women and denies the only Jew in Gaza any visits by humanitarian groups or anyone else, yet Israel is accused of apartheid by the militant humanitarian supporters of Hamas.

Hamas sends indiscriminate rockets into Israeli civilian population centers and celebrates suicide bombers and gun en sent to kill Israelis but only Israel is accused of terrorism by the militant humanitarian supporters of Hamas.

Hamas consistently disregards and violates conventional and customary international law yet it is Israel's world respected, independent, teransparent justice system that is accused of violations by the militant humanitarian supporters of Hamas.

This is the real upside-down world where the defenders of human rights, democracy, free speech. free press and truth are demonized by the human rights violaters who sit on the UNHRC, the authoritarian, dictatorial, totalitarian regimes who dominate the UN, the suppressed populations of the same regimes who get shot for expressing any opposition to their own leaders and the media organizations who know very well the consequences of reporting the truth in Islamic and authoritarian society in contrast to the consequences of reporting half-truths and disinformation in Israel.

Absolute hypocrisy!

Patrick   June 8th, 2010 9:42 am ET

Debra, Does Gilad Shalit have a mother? Why didn't she teach him the truth? Why did Gilad think he could help man an illegal military occupation and support the murder of innocent civilians.

Gilad was a legitimate military target. The poor Gaza kids who die in their hundreds at the hands of Gilads army are not military targets. So don't come crying to the world community if one of your sons who is a conscript to murder has been caught and held in detention.

Gilad Shalit has a very caring, intelligent and honest mother who is a loyal citizen to the country she lives in and values the risks every citizen has to take to defend their homeland which is continually under attack from terrorists and propagandists who have no concept of human rights and humanitarian laws, and can only deny middle eastern history, all with the aim of genocide of the Jewish nation.

Israel has shown exactly how repugnant they really are. The only Americans who support them. Are the congressmen & senators who get a percentage of the three $billion a year in welfare payments made their jewish brothers… November is right around the corner.

Darren   June 15th, 2010 4:56 pm ET

As an American it is time that we reconsider our unilateral support for Israel. This attack on the flotilla was an act of piracy and barbarism, and another in a long and painful line of international crimes perpetrated by the Israeli state under the guise of protecting itself. America is even now shedding its blood because of this Israeli support. Iran today is developing nuclear weapons to counter the hidden nuclear weapons that everyone knows Israel has. As an American I want to know what Israels nuclear capability is and what they intend to do with it. America has to understand that if Israel were to use the nuclear weapons at its disposal it is entirely possible that the world could be engulfed in annihilation. We are not going to alienate the entire world from us for one rogue state much longer. A first response to this incident should be the stoppage of all monies supplied to Israel. Secondly, there should be no more vetoes in the security council that legitimately condemn Israeli actions against her own people and neighboring states. As an influential country it rests upon our shoulders to be fair and balanced in our dealings with the international community. It is time to stop being influenced by a disproportionately small number of voices in America that have Israel’s concerns in mind over those of the United States in particular. If we forced greater cooperation from Israel, we would see some positive progress in our own respect as it concerns how we are perceived, and Israel would realize that its barbaric actions would not be tolerated and could have consequences. There is nothing in the past that warrants this favored state status that Israel enjoys and it is now greatly apparent that we must seriously consider Israels position to us and to others.

Bruce   June 15th, 2010 4:57 pm ET

The Israelis and their advanced weapons are always good at neutralizing “the adversary.” That is as long as the adversaries are civilians, unarmed humanitarian workers or palestinians armed with rocks or crude rockets.
I’m surprised the Israelis didn’t use cluster bombs on the humanitarian workers; that seems to be their favorite weapon against unarmed civilians.
Maybe it’s time to arm the Palestinians and make it a fair fight.

Shame_on_anyone_who_supports_Israel   June 15th, 2010 5:04 pm ET

American silence to condemn Israel's criminal actions against a NATO ally Turkey is hypocritical and inexcusable. As the hyper power of our time, the USA has a moral obligation to get out of her self-imposed slavish attitude to the criminals of Zion. She cannot afford to appear either condoning or be silent on such gross Israeli violations of international laws. Israel, a serial abuser and violator of human rights and international laws, cannot be allowed to behave like a Mafia Don that has no accountability for its horrendous crimes. When her crimes are worse than those of the Somali pirates, she must at least be treated the same way those pirates are treated. I ask if a group of Somali pirates had forced their way onto half a dozen humanitarian aid ships from the USA, killing a dozen or so people and injuring scores more what would have been our reaction?

Sharon   June 15th, 2010 5:15 pm ET

Here are the facts:According to the UN, Israel’s assault on Gaza damaged or destroyed more than 50,000 homes, 800 industrial properties, 200 schools, 39 mosques and even 2 churches. In other words, this was not “surgical air strikes” as Israel often claimed; this was the systematic destruction of a country.

A study published in the prestigious medical journal, The Lancet, found that a shocking 10.2% of Gazan children suffer from stunting due to chronic malnutrition.

...you forget Israel is the illegal military occupier. Hamas is the defender.
-------------

If these brainwased haters of life don't know the difference between confronting issues in a civilized fashion, instead of resorting to violence, it really makes no difference what we do.

They cannot rationalize why Islamic extremists would kill for no other reason than because their beliefs compel them to do so.

In their mind, terrorists kill because they want something or because we did something that makes them kill. If we only gave them something or stopped doing whatever it is that they don’t like, they would be happy and stop killing.

The truth is ... whether Islamic or not ...terrorists would kill millions if they simply had the means to do so. Negotiating or appeasing those whose position is non-negotiable and are willing to die for their cause is no different than trying to negotiate with a hungry lion who has you cornered in the jungle. While you try talking to it it lunges for your throat.

It is exactly the same, as when your ancestors came to, invaded it, killed and robbed the people of their lands and possessions. And now, their descendants (YOU and many others) now condemn the Europeans doing the exact same thing (if at all, but that's a different question, let's just assume for the moment that they are doing the exact same thing).

Worse yet, the descendants (YOU and many others) think that the solution should be if the Jews would just get the hell out of Israel and give back the land to the Arabs. For which you would have the intellectual right to demand, if you, yourself would be willing to pack up, move out and give back the land to the natives.

Let me know when you, and hundreds of millions of others are ready to make such move and that is when I will take seriously anything you say regarding Israel or the Palestinians.

Radiate_Truth   June 25th, 2010 12:03 am ET

As you know, censoring valid speech only validates the truthful content of the speech.

I'm all for calling people out when they propound what I think are bad ideas, unethical ideas or hateful ideas. But as far as trying to eliminate these means I wouldn't attempt it. I value freedom of speech as well as the freedom to castigate someone for espousing hateful things, for example. The marketplace of ideas concept is still attractive to me, even though it means putting up with some garbage. Also, remember that when you try to squelch something entirely it only becomes increasingly attractive to certain people to rebel.

I didn't THINK you would have an answer to my point ...

But then again, Arabs crowd have never been very strong in the whole "answering dissenting points of view" department. Which is why they are so quick to resort to violence rather than "reason" and "logic".

John A   June 26th, 2010 12:09 pm ET

Rachel. you wave the US flag while America kills over one million Iraqi's and Afghans who have never attacked America in any shape or form.

But I suppose you think when America kills harmless families with drone attacks that your are peaceful and not full of hate?

Try to remember the Muslims have been attacked before a single supposed Arab terror attack. Israel was made by western governments by displacing Arabs from their homes. The west defeated Hitler and then immediately assumed Hitlers mantel by attacking an innocent society and invading it with western ideology.

Israel is simply Americas aircraft carrier in the middle east i.e. an immoral power game

Iraq is a war for oil

Afghanistan is a war to control opium supplies and oil pipelines

All the anti Muslim BS that no brainers believe allows our societies to be manipulated into endless war for immoral purposes. Israel defines the west immorality better than anything.

Rachel, some simple rationalization why some Arabs become radicle.
1. You stole their land
2. You stole their oil
3. You occupy their land with your military.

Rachel anyone with a brain can rationalize why some Muslim word angry with the west. Do you know anyone with a brain? If so have a chat with them before you write more teenage rubbish.
