I am a Mac user; can I use CNN Pipeline?
What are the bandwidth requirements to use CNN Pipeline Downloadable and Web Players?
CNN Pipeline, providing fast access to extensive high-quality content, requires a high-speed Internet connection for optimal user experience. Broadband connections include cable Internet, DSL, ADSL, SDSL, T1, Fractional T1's, T3, some satellite Internet connections, and OC3+. Please note that DSL light and wireless connections may experience slower loading if bandwidth is unavailable for Pipeline use. CNN does not recommend using dial-up or other low bandwidth connections to access premium content. If you have questions about your bandwidth capacity, please contact your Internet Service Provider for details.

The CNN Pipeline downloadable player requires approximately 750Kbps of bandwidth for operation, though this number varies based on individual usage.

The Web Player requires approximately 450Kbps of bandwidth for operation, though this number varies based on individual usage.

Can I limit bandwidth used by the application?
No. The player automatically controls thresholds.

Do I need Windows Media Player installed to view Pipeline Video with the downloadable player?
Yes. Windows Media Player is required to utilize the CNN Pipeline Web Player. The Pipeline Video Web Player is optimized for Windows Media Player version 9 and above. To check your version, open the player, select "Help," and then "About" from the top toolbar.

Mac users may watch video using version 9 for Mac OS X and our Web Player.

For optimal performance we recommend that you download the latest player. The latest Windows Media Player can be obtained from the Microsoft Download Center.

You can also upgrade to the most recent version of Windows Media Player at any time. Open the Windows Media Player application and select "Check for Players Updates…" from the Help menu. (Mac users: select "Check for Player Upgrade" from the Help menu.)

Do I need a specific version of Windows Media Player?
The CNN Pipeline Web Player is optimized for Windows Media Player version 9 and above.
To check your version, open the player, select "Help," and then "About" from the top toolbar.

The latest Windows Media Player can be obtained from the Microsoft Download Center.

I see the error "Pipeline cannot start, no internet connection available" while connected. How do I resolve this?
Users of Norton Personal Firewall or other similar programs may receive this message if the program CNN.VideoNet.App.exe is set to "Block all" when attempting to launch the Pipeline Player from your desktop. Please follow these steps to resolve the issue:

Open Norton Personal Firewall. Under "Status & Settings," select "Personal Firewall" and click "Configure." Select the "Programs" tab. Under "Manual Program Control," select "CNN.VideoNet.Alerter.exe" and set the "Internet Access" to "Permit All." Next, select "CNN.VideoNet.App.exe" and set the "Internet Access" to "All."

Click "OK" and close the program. When you re-launch the CNN Pipeline Player, the issue should be resolved.

I am receiving Installshield errors when trying to install the Pipeline Player. How do I resolve this?
If you encounter any situation where the Pipeline Installer is halted during the installation process, you may be unable to complete installation simply by resuming the program. First, you should retry the installation by saving the file from the download page, closing all other applications, and launching from your computer. If this does not work, uninstall the Pipeline Player through Add/Remove Programs, reboot the computer, and try to run the installation file from the download site.

If you receive the error message "1607," please visit Consumer Central for additional support information.

If you receive the error message "not a valid Win32 application," you will need to clear your browser cache in order to download the latest version. If this does not resolve your issue, uninstall the Pipeline Player through Add/Remove Programs, and retry the installation from the download page.

If you are still having this issue, please log a technical support request.

I am a Pipeline user on a corporate network. What level of user rights does Pipeline require for installation and updates?
The Pipeline Player needs to be installed on the account where you intend to use it. It cannot be installed under one user account and then run using another user account. You need administrative privileges to install Pipeline because there are several prerequisites which require this (windows media player, internet explorer, .NET, WS SP3).

Once a user has successfully installed pipeline, they do not require administrative privileges to run the application. They can run as long as they have access to their own registry HKEY_CURRENT_USER... and their own profile directory C:\Documents and Settings...\[username]. Most "normal" user privileges are set to allow this, unless your IT department has placed further restrictions on user access rights. If this is the case, you may want to use the CNN Pipeline Web Player instead.

What are the differences between the CNN Pipeline Web and downloadable players?
No matter which CNN Pipeline player you choose, Pipeline puts you in control of the news. You can watch up to four news streams at once, changing streams with just one click. Additionally, CNN Pipeline offers commercial free access to video content on-demand, including CNN.com's free video, with multiple features for convenient searching and browsing. Our video archive, not available through the Free Video Player, gives you unlimited access to CNN's online video library. In the downloadable player, the "Watch and Work" feature allows you to minimize the player on your desktop. For the news that matters to you in a format that fits your lifestyle; CNN Pipeline - Ride Your World!

For detailed information, please review our side-by-side comparison!

Why do video clips sometimes stop or pause?
The most common cause of a pause or stop is Internet traffic congestion. There is a limit to the amount of information able to pass through your Internet connection, and if you exceed this, the player will "buffer" the data until it can pass. If this problem persists, try closing the player, and then re-launch it from any video link on CNN.com.

My audio is of poor quality or unavailable. How can I fix this?
Poor audio can result from multiple sources. Internet traffic congestion is the most common cause of pauses or stops, though high CPU usage on your computer or low speed connections can also result in similar issues. If the audio problem appears to be a result of Internet traffic congestion, try closing the player, and then re-launch it from any video link on CNN.com. If high CPU usage is causing interruptions to Pipeline audio, try closing any programs that you are not using and re-launching the player. Finally, check to ensure that your connection is fast enough to support the Pipeline Player by reviewing our Bandwidth Requirements.

Receiving no audio transmission is generally an indicator that your speakers or system volume have been muted. Make sure that your audio is enabled and that both your system volume and Windows Media Player volume have the "mute" function disabled.

What about personal firewalls?
A firewall is software designed to be your first line of defense to prevent hackers and other unauthorized users from accessing your computer and files. If you believe that your personal firewall is blocking transmission, please review the information below to allow CNN.com video to stream.

Norton Personal Firewall (NPF) or Norton Internet Security (NIS):
• Go to Firewall Settings > Set slider to Medium > click Custom Level button and make sure your ActiveX Control Security is set to none.

Norton Personal Firewall (version 2004 or newer):
• Go to Settings > Ad Blocking > Turn Off

Norton Internet Security (version 2004 or newer):
• Go to Norton AntiSpam > Ad Blocking > Turn Off

Norton Personal Firewall (version 2003 or older):
• Go to Internet Zone Control > Trusted > Add cnn.com and cnn.com/video to the list of trusted sites.

Norton Internet Security (version 2003 or older):
• Under "Settings" locate "Ad Blocking" > switch it to "OFF"

If you have another brand of firewall, adjust any of the above settings per its control interface. Pay particular attention to any Ad Blocking settings, or turn off third-party Ad Blocking software if you have any running. If you don't have a firewall, or if you can't access CNN video after adjusting your firewall, please see instructions for clearing your cache.

I work within a secure network. How will this affect my viewing?
Some corporate networks and Internet Service Providers block video transmissions by use of a Firewall. If you cannot see video clips (even though your system meets the system requirements noted above), you may want to contact your Internet Service Provider or network administrator to see whether a security firewall is blocking video transmission.

I can open the player, but cannot see any video.
This can be the result of several scenarios. If you were able to use the CNN Free Video Player, It is likely that you already meet technical requirements to access CNN Pipeline Video.

In some events, an application error may be causing the problem. Try closing the player, and then reopen it via any video link on CNN.com. If restarting the Pipeline player does not resolve the issue, please ensure that you are using the latest version by visiting our download page. If you continue to receive this error, you may need to reinstall the Pipeline Player by visiting our Member Center.

Additionally, your Internet Service Provider could be experiencing problems with its servers. If you cannot view other pages on the Internet, and if the problem persists, you should contact your Internet Service Provider for assistance. If you work within a secure network or behind a firewall, please review the FAQs on Internet Firewalls and Secure Networks to ensure that either is not causing the issue.

However, if you can access the player on another machine or other people can view it, it may be a problem with your browser cache.

In Microsoft Internet Explorer:
• Click on Tools, then choose Internet Options.
• Click the General tab.

What ports do I need open to access this?
Home users should be able to access content without changing these configurations. If you are attempting to access Pipeline via a company network, you may occasionally find that the proxy settings have been set to prevent external streaming sources from occurring. Contact your IT department for additional information and support.

What is a browser cookie?
A browser cookie is a small text file placed on your computer by a Web site you visited. Some Web sites, like CNN.com, use browser cookies to recognize repeat users. This helps repeat users bypass login or registration pages and allows CNN to track user behavior across all the CNN sites.

Cookies are not programs. They cannot damage your system or files. Generally, cookies work by assigning a unique number to each user that has no meaning outside the site that placed the cookie. In other words, you are not identified personally; we only track number randomly assigned to you.

Some of our advertisers use cookies as well. They collect click-thru data on the advertisements to gauge how well individual advertising campaigns work.

If you do not want information collected in this way, most browsers have a simple procedure allowing you to accept or deny cookies on a case-by-case basis. This feature is usually located in the "Options" or "Preferences" menu of your browser.

However, cookies are necessary to use certain features (e.g., customized delivery of information) that require registration. To learn more about cookies and your privacy rights, read CNN's Privacy Statement.

I Used FireFox to download the CNN Pipeline Set Up application, but can't find the file. Where is it located?
If you used Firefox to download the CNN Pipeline Set-Up application, Firefox will download the setup file in a temporary directory, most likely your desktop. Once the download is complete, double-click the Setup file to install the CNN Pipeline application.

What does "network error" mean? How do I resolve this?
The error message "network error" is displayed when Pipeline is unable to reach the authentication service, which provides verification of your login and password. This can occasionally be the result of the Pipeline server experiencing unusually high traffic, but is generally caused by faulty network connections at the user level. Try closing the Pipeline Player, restarting your Internet connection, and logging back on to the system. If this does not resolve your issue, please log a technical support request through our feedback form.

What does "system error" mean? How do I resolve this?
The "system error" message is displayed when the Pipeline application experiences a problem and must terminate the application. If restarting the Pipeline player does not resolve the issue, please ensure that you are using the latest version by visiting our download page in the Member Center. If you continue to receive this error, you may need to reinstall the Pipeline Player by visiting our Member Center. If this does not resolve your issue, please log a technical support request through our feedback form.

Why did I receive the "video unable to play" or "video unavailable" message? How do I resolve this?
The error message "video unable to play" or display message "video unavailable" generally indicates that the Pipeline application is unable to reach or play the video on CNN's server. This could simply indicate the end of a stream or that the video is no longer available. Please select another video to continue your viewing. If this does not resolve your issue, please log a technical support request through our support form.

Also note that users of Norton Personal Firewall or other similar programs may receive this message if the program CNN.VideoNet.App.exe is set to "Block all" when attempting to view video streams in the CNN Pipeline Player. Please follow these steps to resolve the issue:

Open Norton Personal Firewall. Under "Status & Settings," select "Personal Firewall" and click "Configure." Select the "Programs" tab. Click "OK" and close the program. When you re-launch the CNN Pipeline Player, the issue should be resolved.

If you are certain you did not register your email address, please use the technical issues form to report this problem and we will investigate as quickly as possible.

Why am I receiving an "error signing in" message?
Generally, this message will appear only when your username and password combination is incorrect. If this is the case and you believe that you may have forgotten your password, please follow these steps.

On the login screen, click "forgot password" and you will find the password hint that you entered when you registered. If you still cannot remember your password, click "reset your password" to receive an email with a Web address and a reset code. Follow the instructions in the email to select a new password.

If you believe that you entered an incorrect e-mail address at the time of registration, please log a support request.

We have also identified that some users may see this error if their computer time is set incorrectly. We recommend that you re-synch their system time to allow CNN Pipeline to authenticate you as a subscriber. Microsoft's Knowledgebase provides more information on this situation.

If this does not resolve the issue, please log a support request.

Why do I receive "authorization failure" when trying to sign in?
The error message "authorization failure" can indicate multiple subscription issues; credit card expiration, credit card cancellation, subscription expiration, account has attempted to sign in three or more times and has failed, or a system error. If you believe that your credit card may be at issue, please check the "Member Center" to ensure that your information is up to date. If this does not resolve the issue, please submit a support request through the billing issues form to report this problem and we will investigate as quickly as possible.
