During a May 7 NATO airstrike, the Chinese embassy in Belgrade was struck by five bombs and heavily damaged. NATO apologized and U.S. officials blamed the incident, which killed three and injured 20, on outdated maps which indicated that the building was a procurement center for the Yugoslav military. The bombing prompted anti-U.S. and anti-NATO protests, some of them violent, in 20 Chinese cities.
