Joao da Costa, 54, is a caretaker at Dili’s Santa Cruz cemetery, the scene of a massacre by Indonesian troops in 1991 in which 217 people were killed.

"I am very happy that East Timor is becoming independent. We fought for 25 years and finally we got it. I think it is time to forget the past and I will not ask for anything -- I’m proud of living in a democracy. All of us will now have to work hard for this country, what I ask is for the international community to keep an eye on us and to support us."
