Marshal Gutteres, 49, has a stall in Dili’s Bacara Market.

"For 24 years we struggled and fought to free ourselves from Indonesian rule. Now we are free and I am very happy. Under the Indonesians we always felt scared and you could hear gunfire often in the city. Before 1999 I had three stalls in different markets, but they were all destroyed by the militias and I lost everything. I had to escape to West Timor with my wife and six children. I think Xanana will be a good leader and help us to make our country strong -- that’s why we voted for him."
