A magnitude 9.0 earthquake centered about 100 miles southwest of Aceh, Indonesia, sent tsunamis across the coasts of Asia and Africa on December 26, 2004. Nearly 170,000 people were reported dead in the countries of India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bangladesh, Kenya, Malaysia, Maldives, Seychelles, Somalia, Tanzania and Myanmar. Over 100,000 people remain missing.
