WHO WE LOST

INSIDE PULSE NIGHTCLUB

  • Angel Colon, a survivor of the Pulse nightclub mass shooting, listens during a press conference with Orlando Health trauma staff at Orlando Regional Medical Center June 14, 2016 in Orlando, Florida.

    What they witnessed

At least a dozen of them crawled into a bathroom, cramming into a single stall. They cried and whispered prayers. Gunfire replaced music. Glass shattered. The acrid smell of gunpowder filled the air.
A figure loomed outside the stall door. A man collapsed in a pool of his own blood. His killer laughed.
For three harrowing hours, as the gunman took hostages, people crouched in a dressing room or in air conditioning vents. One woman survived by covering herself with bodies.

THE SHOOTER

  • In this undated photo recived by AFP on June 12, 2016, shows Omar Mateen, 29, a US citizen of Afghani descent from Port St. Lucie, Florida, from his MYSPACE.COM page, who has been named as the gunman in the mass shootings at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida

    Omar Mateen

He visited gay chat rooms. His wife knew he wanted jihadist attack. He pledged allegiance to ISIS.
And the FBI had already investigated him.
Mateen first came on the FBI's radar in 2013 when he made "inflammatory comments to co-workers alleging possible terrorist ties." In 2014, the FBI interviewed Mateen again over possible connections with Moner Mohammad Abu-Salha, a Florida man who became the first known American suicide bomber in Syria. The men frequented the same mosque.

The Defense Department is searching for the successor to the M4 combat rifle and gun makers are loading with lobbyists to win the work. His weapon: The modern assault-style rifle

Mateen purchased his just weeks before the shooting. Since 2004, assault-style rifles have become widely available in retail stores and gun shows across the U.S. for prices ranging from $250 to $15,000.

THE CITY

  • The Parliament House, a gay bar and hotel in Orlando, hosted a vigil on Sunday night for victims of Saturday's mass shooting.

    Inside an Orlando gay bar

Less than 24 hours after the shooting, a drag queen stood before the crowd at another Orlando bar, just a few miles away from Pulse. Without her dress, heels or wig, she addressed the room of mostly gay men.
"It could have been any of us. Any of us," she said. "Why not us? Why are we here?"
