Another Internet first: 'Quantum Project'
Movie billed as first feature created for Internet audience(CNN) -- Millions of movie fans will head to the theater or video store this weekend. But unless they decide to log on their computers, they'll never see a new flick starring John Cleese, Fay Masterson and Stephen Dorff. "Quantum Project," billed as a 32-minute sci-fi "feature" film, debuted Friday at 12:01 a.m. on the Internet at SightSound.com. Producers at Metafilmics, the company that made the movie, say this is the first "Hollywood-level production" to be created for an Internet audience. Web surfers can download or stream the movie and watch it for $3.95. It will be offered exclusively on the Web for a year. SightSound.com, which launched way back in 1995, also offers music selections to download from its site, but CEO Scott Sander sees it expanding to offer more films in the future. "It's exciting," he says. "A year ago we were the first one to put a feature movie of any kind for sale over the Internet. That was the Darren Aronofsky movie 'Pi.' Since that time, we've done a deal with Miramax to release 12 of their movies over the Internet. Now we have the first Internet feature film that's going out. It's been a wild year." The premiere of "Quantum Project" included an "Internet collides with Hollywood party" in Los Angeles on Thursday night-Friday morning, says Sander. There have been no official reviews of the film, but Dorff apparently offered his opinion after seeing it for the first time. "He said, 'Whoa,'" recalls Sander. "'This could be bad for film.'"
