Madonna to wed in gothic style

DORNOCH, Scotland -- Details have begun to emerge of the dress in which Madonna will wed British film director Guy Ritchie in a Scottish castle later on Friday.

London jeweller Susy Lauder disclosed that "in keeping with the gothic style wedding dress Madonna is going to wear," the singer had chosen an antique French bracelet studded with 19 carats of diamonds.

But Lauder, who family runs Moira of New Bond Street, did disclose that the $72,000 bracelet was actually selected by Stella McCartney.

McCartney, daughter of ex-Beatle Sir Paul McCartney and reportedly the designer of Madonna's wedding dress, accompanied Madonna on the shopping trip.

The Alfred Dunhill company announced that Ritchie would wear a lovat green jacket of Shetland tweed with matching tie and socks and a plain white cotton shirt with a 1930s-style straight collar.

The ensemble was expected to include a Mackintosh tartan kilt -- the garment that has fascinated the tabloids and caused fevered speculation about whether he would follow the Scots tradition of spurning underpants.

He will also wear a regimental sporran which belonged to his grandfather, Major Stewart "Jack" Ritchie.

The wedding was a day after Madonna, 42, and Ritchie, 32, brought their 4-month-old son Rocco to Dornoch Cathedral to be baptized, to the delight of several hundred local people who joined the media crush outside.

Private security men made sure that no one got close to the happy couple at the christening or to celebrity guests including Gwyneth Paltrow.

Though something went awry with the security inside the church. Police said an unemployed 51-year-old man from southern England was discovered in the building after the ceremony and was arrested.

Police said the man did not disturb the christening and was not considered to be a stalker.

A second man, a 33-year-old, was arrested early Friday morning, but police again gave no details of the charges. Neither suspect was working for the media, police said.

As the final preparations were being made for the showbiz wedding of the year, mystery still surrounds the actual details of the ceremony at Skibo Castle, near Dornoch.

The world's media, who are camped outside the gates of the luxury Highland retreat, began massing at Skibo just after dawn.

But at the secluded gatehouse, which marks the guests' entrance to the 7.5 acre estate, there was little for the scores of cameramen to film or photograph.

Guests at the exclusive bash will include singer Sting and his wife Trudi Styler who introduced the couple two years ago.

Gwyneth Paltrow is believed to be acting as maid of honour for Madonna while Ritchie's best man is rumoured to be his old pal, nightclub owner Piers Adams.

Some celebrity guests are still due to be fly in for the bash however for the second day in a row Inverness Airport was fog-bound and closed to incoming flights.

Madonna and Ritchie met in 1998 and despite living on different sides of the Atlantic romance blossomed.

In August she gave birth to the couple's son and rumours of their impending marriage began to grow.

Two weeks ago it was officially announced that the pair would marry in Northern Scotland when the marriage banns were posted in the Dornoch.

Yesterday the town's registrar delivered the banns to the couple, finally removing the last official hurdle before they were clear to marry.

The couple's presence in the Highlands has created great interest among locals who have been cashing in on the vast media contingent who have jetted in from all over the world.

Local businesses including hotels and restaurants have been booming while enterprising people have been offering their services as star spotters to the journalists.

After today's wedding it is understood the couple will spend Christmas and a brief honeymoon in the secluded castle of Skibo.
