Madonna goes Scottish in Spain

BARCELONA, Spain -- Pop diva Madonna donned a Scottish kilt to begin her European tour in Spain.

The United States' most successful female singer of all time went through a fast moving high-flying show in front of about 18,000 fans on Saturday, many of whom had camped outside the Palau St. Jordi to secure tickets.

Madonna sang many of her latest hits from the albums "Ray of Light" and "Music" as well as some of her classic songs from her early career going back nearly 20 years, such as "Holiday."

The 42-year-old emerged from a cloud of smoke onto the stage wearing a short kilt with a slit on either side over long leather trousers.

Madonna married in Scotland in a secret ceremony earlier this year.

Her Spanish show combined a dazzling mixture of high-flying sequences reminiscent of the film "Hidden Tiger, Crouching Dragon" and fast moving dancing.

A multi-screen panel burst with psychedelic images and high speed light shows while the stage served as trap doors.

Madonna also took on the parts of geisha, a cowgirl and a modern dancer during her sensual routine.

She pleased the home crowd with a rendition of "La Isla Bonita" in Spanish and the call "Visca Barcelona!" -- Catalan for Long Live Barcelona.

Madonna performs one more concert in Barcelona before moving on to Milan, Italy, and ending her tour in London on July 12. She then embarks on a three-month sold-out American tour.
