Italian Mafia boss arrested

NAPLES, Italy -- A Mafia boss who was one of Italy's most-wanted fugitives has been arrested near Naples.

Police said Angelo Nuvoletta is considered a key link between the Camorra, the Naples-area crime syndicate, and the Sicilian Mafia, the Associated Press reported.

He has been convicted in his absence of ordering the killing of a journalist who wrote about organised crime.

He was sentenced to life in prison for ordering the 1985 killing of Giancarlo Siani, a reporter for the Neapolitan daily Il Mattino, Nuvoletta.

The 1997 conviction, brought about in part by evidence from supergrass mobsters from Sicily, was upheld last autumn by Italy's supreme court.

Siani had written an article indicating that Nuvoletta had betrayed a fellow mobster.

Nuvoletta, 60, was one of three brothers considered by investigators to be top Camorra bosses.

One brother died of illness while in prison, while the other was fatally gunned down during clan warfare for control of the Camorra's lucrative rackets.

The Camorra's illegal activities include drug and arms trafficking, contraband cigarette smuggling, extortion of local business owners, prostitution and clandestine betting.

Nuvoletta was No. 5 on Italy's list of the 30 most dangerous fugitives, the Italian news agency AGI reported.
