LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings" and "Moulin Rouge" were the only multiple winners Saturday night at the MTV Movie Awards, honoring the year's films from a decidedly youthful perspective.

"The Lord of the Rings" took the golden popcorn trophy for best movie and for best breakthrough male, Orlando Bloom, as the prince Legolas. Nicole Kidman won top honors for female performance in "Moulin Rouge," and she and co-star Ewan McGregor captured the best musical sequence award.

They fell short in the best kiss category, however, as Jason Biggs and Seann William Scott received the honor for their smack in "American Pie 2."

Performers and presenters at the 2002 show, taped at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles for broadcast Thursday, included Jennifer Connelly, Nicolas Cage, Freddie Prinze Jr., Eminem, the White Stripes and Kelly Osbourne, daughter of rocker Ozzy Osbourne, whose family stars in MTV's most popular show.

MTV viewers selected the winners for the music network's sixth show, hosted by Jack Black and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer's" Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Pop stars Will Smith ("Ali") and Mandy Moore ("A Walk to Remember") also were winners, taking the best male performance and female breakthrough awards, respectively.

Denzel Washington carried home an award in an unusual category -- best villain for his turn as a crooked cop in "Training Day," for which he also won this year's best actor Oscar.

Other winners were "Pearl Harbor" (best action sequence for the attack scene), Vin Diesel and Paul Walker in "The Fast and the Furious" (best onscreen team), Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan vs. the Hong Kong Gang in "Rush Hour 2" (best fight sequence) and Reese Witherspoon in "Legally Blonde" (best comedic performance).
