(CNN) -- Michael Jackson calls himself the "King of Pop, " but his often strange public behavior has earned him less flattering nicknames, such as "Wacko Jacko," and made him a tabloid favorite.

His latest headline-grabbing stunt came Tuesday, when he dangled his son over a fourth floor balcony of hotel in Berlin, Germany, while a crowd of shocked fans watched below.

Jackson later apologized, saying he had made a "terrible mistake," but not before video of the incident was broadcast repeatedly all over the world. (Full story)

Last week, Jackson was in a California courtroom, where his appearance attracted more attention than the possibility of a $21 million verdict in the lawsuit brought by a promoter who claims Jackson backed out of a pair of millennium concerts.

Jackson arrived late, was wearing a mask and walked under an umbrella -- presumably to protect himself from the sun.

When he took off the mask, photographers zoomed in on his surgically altered, stubbly face.

"I know that if I had so much work done I would try and find a surgeon who wouldn't make it look so obvious," entertainment Correspondent Gail Murphy said.

At one point during his testimony, Jackson used a small magnifying glass to read documents.

Jackson has also had recent run-ins with his record label, Sony, blaming it for the poor sales of his album "Invincible." At a July rally he called Sony President Tommy Mottola a "racist" and a "devil."

His home life has also raised eyebrows, his "Neverland Ranch" is said to have a zoo and amusement park rides.

Jackson's marriage to Elvis' daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, was considered so strange that they were asked on national television if they had ever had sex.

"Yes, yes, yes," Presley replied.

The marriage did not last, and neither did his second marriage to Debbie Rowe, the mother of two of his children. Little is known about his third child, except that the toddler's name is Prince Michael. His older brother is also named Prince Michael.

Jackson has been in the spotlight for most of his life, selling millions of records with his brothers in The Jackson 5 and becoming even more famous as a solo artist. His 1982 album "Thriller" was the best-selling album of all time.

But he was still surprised at the MTV Video Music Awards in August.

"If someone had told me that one day I would be getting, as a musician, the artist of the millennium award, I wouldn't believe it," Jackson said.

MTV was surprised too, since that award does not exist. He was onstage to accept a birthday cake from the music network.
