Birthday bash for Brooklyn Bridge canceled

NEW YORK (CNN) -- A birthday celebration for the Brooklyn Bridge was canceled because recent warnings of a potential terrorist attack against New York City landmarks would have made it difficult logistically to pull off, officials said Thursday.

The celebration -- marking the fabled bridge's 119th birthday -- had been planned for June 2.

"We met with police officials -- they didn't say you should cancel it -- but we thought because the scope of the festivities would be reduced, we thought to reschedule for a future date," said Glenn Von Nostitz, communications director for the Brooklyn Borough President Mart Markowitz.

The borough president's office said vague terror threats had prompted authorities to scale back planning and eliminate the use of fireworks. Planners could have made it smaller, but they were aiming for a larger event. They also indicated they did not want to overburden the police department and Coast Guard.

"We want people to feel confident coming to the event," said Von Nostitz. "The police are so busy with Fleet Week. When you put it all together it all makes sense."

Fleet Week is an annual event in New York's harbor. Twenty ships -- 18 American, one Canadian and one from Denmark -- with 6,000 sailors aboard are participating in this year's maritime celebration. (More on Flee Week)
