NEW DELHI, India (CNN) -- The death toll has climbed to 25 after the collapse of a major bridge over the Daman Ganga river in the western Indian port city of Daman.
Rescue teams are continuing the search for more bodies and according to authorities, the dead included 23 children and two adults. At least 20 people are also injured, district officials said.
Officials at the police control room said they fear the toll will rise further, as six people remain missing. A number of vehicles and rickshaws were on the bridge when it collapsed on Thursday as well as a school van.
The concrete Daman Ganga bridge links two halves of the town of Daman.
Police officials said phone lines between the two sides had also been disconnected because they ran along the bridge, which they said had probably been washed away by heavy monsoon rainfall.
Daman is a major trade port and tourist resort on India's western coast along the Arabian Sea, about 190 kilometers (118 miles) north of Mumbai.
