Troussier fired as Marseille coach

Troussier failed to lead Marseille into a place in Europe next season

PARIS, France -- Philippe Troussier has been sacked as coach of Olympique Marseille, the Ligue 1 club's chairman Pape Diouf has confirmed.

"His mission has come to an end and we have thanked Philippe for all his efforts," said Diouf.

Diouf said a decision on Troussier's replacement would not be taken before next week.

The former Japan coach, who joined Marseille in November on a two-year deal to replace Jose Anigo, failed to qualify his team for the UEFA Cup.

Marseille finished fifth in the French league standings after drawing 3-3 with Bordeaux on the last day of the season.

Metz's Jean Fernandez has been tipped to take over from Troussier.
