(CNN) -- Each morning, millions of city dwellers across the world embark on a mission to beat traffic jams and congested roads, via a variety of transport ranging from modern high-speed trains to noisy tricycles -- and even horse and cart.

But whether it's navigating Beijing's foggy streets on an electric bike, careering around the streets of Bangkok on a tuk-tuk or jumping onto a jam-packed metro carriage in London, the commute to and from work in large metropolitan areas is a global experience that defines the start and end of our working days.
