Jakarta, Indonesia (CNN) -- Six people were killed and dozens injured after a train derailed Tuesday in East Java, Indonesia, a spokesman for the Transportation Ministry said.

Three train carts overturned after the derailment, causing the deaths and injuries, said spokesman Bambang Ervan.

"Rescue teams are on the scene and cranes have been sent to help evacuate the train," he added.

The train serving the Java island route is normally packed with commuters. Local media reported as many as 76 people were injured, but the transportation ministry could not confirm that figure.
