Officials say the governor of Khyber Pukhtunkhwa province was going to a political rally
The governor escapes unharmed
Six people are wounded at the rally
The military has been battling militants in the area
Suspected militants launched rocket attacks on the convoy of a provincial governor and a political rally he was about to attend in northwestern Pakistan, wounding six people, government officials said Tuesday.
Gov. Syed Masood Kausa of Khyber Pukhtunkhwa province escaped unharmed in Orakzai Agency, a volatile tribal area in northwest Pakistan, where the attack took place, said Fazal Qadir, a local government official.
The political rally he was about to attend also was hit with a rocket about the same time, according to government spokesman Sahibzada Mohammad Hanif. All the injured people came from the rally.
The government launched a military offensive in March against militants who fled fighting in North and South Waziristan.
CNN visited Orakzai in June and was told by military officials that 90% of the agency had been cleared of militants. Since then, however, fighting between militants and Pakistani forces has continued periodically in the area.
