Peru's prime minister resigns

Story highlights

  • Salomon Lerner steps down
  • Oscar Valdes, the interior minister, will replace him
Peruvian Prime Minister Salomon Lerner has resigned and Oscar Valdes, the interior minister, will replace him, the government said on Saturday.
It was not immediately clear why Lerner stepped down.
President Ollanta Humala thanked Lerner for his service, according to a statement.
Lerner's resignation prompted all Cabinet ministers to offer to step down, as required by Peruvian law.
Left-leaning Humala took office in July after campaigning on promises to spread the country's economic boom to the poor.
