Borussia Dortmund enjoyed a comfortable 3-1 win over Hannover in the Bundesliga on Saturday and remain in second place behind runaway leaders Bayern Munich.
Polish striker Robert Lewandowski scored a first-half brace as the home side raced into a 2-0 lead in the first quarter of the match.
Mohammed Abdellaoue halved the deficit for Hannover five minutes before the break but Julian Schieber made sure of the three points for Dortmund hitting home in the 72nd minute.
Bayern can restore their 17-point lead if they beat Hoffenheim on Sunday.
A 4-1 win for Schalke over Wolfsburg sees them move up to sixth while in the bottom half of the table, Werder Bremen slumped to a third straight defeat losing 1-0 at home to relegation-threatened Augsburg.
Nuremberg move one place above Bremen to 12th after a 1-1 draw against fifth-place Freiburg.
Seventh-place Hamburg also dropped points against less-fancied opposition with a 1-1 draw at home to bottom-of-the-table Greuther Fuerth.
