The Pakistani army convoy was ambushed by heavily armed militants, sources said

Another army convoy in the same area was attacked in May

Peshawar, Pakistan CNN  —

Six security personnel were killed and three injured Wednesday when a Pakistani army convoy was ambushed on the outskirts of Peshawar, near the troubled Darra Adamkhel region.

Official sources told CNN that the security forces convoy was targeted by heavily armed militants with heavy weapons and rockets.

The exchange of firing between the militants and the security forces continued for almost an hour.

On May 16 an army convoy was also attacked in the same area, leaving at least five soldiers dead.

The banned Pakistani Taliban group Tehreek-i-Taliban accepted responsibility a day later for that attack and for one on police that left four officers injured.

Security forces claimed to have killed at least four attackers in Wednesday’s ambush.
