Five days ahead of Freedom Day, Google Street View has expanded into Robben Island, the former political prison that once housed Nelson Mandela.
Google trekkers toured the island and prison with their cameras for four- to five-hour stretches to capture the scenery.
Former South African President Nelson Mandela spent 18 years on Robben Island. Now, anyone can tour his cell from their home computer or mobile phone.
Former political prisoner and Robben Island tour guide Vusumsi Mcongo provides video annotation of the tour. Mandela's cell (pictured) measured 2-by 2 meters (6.5-by 6.5 feet). As Mandela was 6-foot tall, it was a tight squeeze.
The tour covers many pivotal areas of the prison, including the recreational hall (pictured), where table tennis and pool was played and movies were sometimes shown.
