Hillary Clinton told Extra's Mario Lopez that she had thought about picking Bill Clinton as her running mate
But Clinton laughed and said she was advised it would be unconstitutional
Hillary Clinton said the idea of picking her husband – former President Bill Clinton – as vice president had “crossed her mind,” but has been advised it would be unconstitutional.
“He would be good, but he’s not eligible, under the Constitution. He has served his two terms and I think the argument would be as vice president it would not be possible for him to ever succeed to the position – at least that’s what I’ve been told,” she joked to Extra’s Mario Lopez, in an interview posted Monday.
But she added, “It has crossed my mind.”
The laughter at the thought of a “Vice President Bill Clinton,” was a light turn for the besieged Democratic front-runner.
Clinton has continued sliding in national polling based on voters’ lack of trust in her, thanks in large part to how she has handled controversy over using a private email address for public work as secretary of state. Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, a Democratic socialist, has overtaken her in recent polling in New Hampshire and Iowa, although she continues to hold a sizable lead in national polling.
She also weighed in on Donald Trump in the interview, saying she has been “watching with some because I think a lot of what he has said has been really inflammatory and destructive.”
“He has made a lot of claims, and I think it may reflect on the Republican side some of the pent-up frustration that they have,” she said. “I’m going to let them deal with however they choose their nominee, but I am certainly looking forward, if he were the nominee, to debating him in the general election because there’s a lot to talk about starting with his really outrageous statements about immigration.”
Clinton also commented on her meeting with two top celebrities, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West.
“I really found her to be warm and very personable. She had a nice way of introducing her husband, as if I didn’t know who he was, right?” Clinton said. “Certainly think many people see her as someone who gets up every day and tries to figure out how to make that day successful.”
And of West, who joked recently he was running for president in 2020, Clinton said, “Well, if I’m going for my second term, (I would ask him) to wait four years, but if I’m not … be sure he has comfortable shoes because there’s a lot of walking involved.”
