Ex-"Full House" actor John Stamos is formally charged with driving under the influence

Charge stems from his June 12 arrest in Beverly Hills

CNN  —

Actor John Stamos, known for his role in the sitcom “Full House,” was formally charged Thursday with driving under the influence in June in Beverly Hills, California.

The actor, 52, faces one misdemeanor count of driving while under the influence of drugs, the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office said.

Stamos was pulled over June 12 after police received calls about a motorist who was behaving strangely and driving erratically, prosecutors said. Stamos was the only occupant in his vehicle at the time.

Paramedics took him to a nearby hospital, where authorities came to the conclusion that he’d been driving under the influence and arrested him, police said in June.

It wasn’t immediately clear Thursday why it took four months to file charges against Stamos. A spokesman for the district attorney’s office said the Beverly Hills Police Department didn’t present the case to prosecutors until October 6.

Stamos faces a maximum sentence of six months in jail if convicted.

The actor is scheduled to be arraigned Friday, but since it’s a misdemeanor case, an attorney can appear on his behalf without him being present.

The case remains under investigation by the Beverly Hills Police Department.

Stamos currently stars in the new Fox series “Grandfathered.”
