Tennis player Arina Rodionova is consoled by her newly-betrothed, Tyrone Vickery, after losing an Australian Open qualifier the day after their wedding.

Rodionova had been hoping to win a wildcard place in the main draw of 2016's opening grand slam tournament.

However, despite winning a playoff semifinal on Saturday morning just hours before her wedding to the Australian Rules footballer, world No. 309 Rodionova fell short at the last hurdle Sunday.

Maddison Inglis, ranked 781st in the world, triumphed 6-4 6-2 to go through to the Melbourne main draw. The 17-year-old from Perth in Western Australia had missed out on a spot the week before when she lost in the final of the national under-18 championships.

It was the third time Rodionova had lost the playoff final for the Australian Open -- where she was beaten in the first round in her only two singles appearances, in 2011 and 2015. Here she shows Ukrainian player Olga Savchuk her wedding ring.
