Kipunji monkey —
First spotted in 2003 in Tanzania, the Kipunji monkey -- one of Africa's rarest primates -- was once believed to be a myth. Tim Davenport of The Wildlife Conservation Society in Tanzania was the scientist behind the find.

Just over 1,000 Kipunjis are believed to be left on the planet, and Davenport and his team are doing everything in their power to prevent that number from dipping.

Atheris Matildae, aka Matilda's horned viper —
Davenport discovered a new viper in 2012 (it's named after his daughter, Matilda). Since the species is a new find, there is no known antidote to its venom.

Davenport's reed frog —
Davenport discovered this frog in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania.
