An altercation erupted into gunfire at a bar inside a mall in Florida, leaving one person dead and two others injured, authorities said early Thursday.
The shooting happened at 11:51 p.m. Wednesday at the Blue Martini bar at the Galleria mall in Fort Lauderdale, police spokeswoman Casey Liening said.
Two people were taken to the hospital – one in critical condition, she said. The shooter is in custody.
Mark Hunter, who was inside the bar, said people charged the shooter to stop him from firing more shots. “That was a good thing. They jumped on him to try and get him,” he told CNN affiliate WSVN.
Ean Carroll described chaotic scenes as panicked patrons realized the rapid pops were gunfire.
“You heard one shot and everyone kind of puzzled for a minute. And then you started to hear repeated and that’s when everyone kind of ran for the doors. It was just kind of a surreal scene of a few people down at the end of the bar.”
Investigators worked at the scene through the night to gather evidence. Police said it’s an active investigation to determine the circumstances and the motive.
The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale has more than 100 retailers, according to its website. CNN has reached out to the mall for more information.
