Washington CNN  —

Former Georgia Democratic gubernatorial nominee Stacey Abrams on Thursday left open the possibility of serving as a running mate for the eventual 2020 Democratic presidential nominee, saying she would be “honored to consider” the opportunity should it arise.

“If any of the nominees offered me the opportunity to run with them as their vice president after they have been selected as a nominee, of course I’d be honored to consider that,” Abrams told CNN’s Alisyn Camerota on “New Day.” She added that a candidate has not asked her to serve as their running mate, saying she thinks it’s too early in the race for those conversations to occur.

Abrams, who, after losing her bid last year to serve as Georgia’s governor, publicly mulled a 2020 campaign, said earlier this week that she would not enter the race as a presidential candidate. In an interview with The New York Times on Tuesday, she said she would be “honored to be considered by any nominee” as a running mate. She previously downplayed the possibility in March when she was floating the idea of a presidential campaign, saying “you don’t run for second place.”

On Thursday, however, the former minority leader in the Georgia State House of Representatives told Camerota that she’s “met with most of the presidential candidates,” adding that while she’s “had great conversations with them,” her focus right now is on fighting voter suppression in the 2020 election.

On Tuesday, Abrams launched a new national program aimed at helping Democrats in key states improve their “voter protection operations” ahead of next year’s election. The program, titled Fair Fight 2020, will target battleground states with “voter protection teams” that will “protect the right to vote,” according to its website.
