On Friday, June 24, the Supreme Court ruled to overturn Roe v. Wade, holding that there is no longer a federal constitutional right to an abortion. Earlier this year, a draft version of the decision was leaked, bringing abortion to the forefront of political discourse and kicking off a new wave of protests.

"Roe was egregiously wrong from the start," Justice Samuel Alito wrote in his majority opinion. "Its reasoning was exceptionally weak, and the decision has had damaging consequences. And far from bringing about a national settlement of the abortion issue, Roe and Casey have enflamed debate and deepened division."

The groundbreaking case granted women the right to have an abortion under the 14th Amendment in 1973. Abortion has been a contentious issue for decades since, with passionate debate and protest on both sides.

Photographer Sarah Silbiger was on the ground at the Supreme Court for CNN and shared what she saw.

"When the ruling was handed down, it was immediately clear what the verdict was. The anti-abortion demonstrators erupted in a chorus of screams. It was pandemonium," Silbiger said.
