Things looked very different at this time last year. Covid-19 vaccines were rolling out across the country and millions of people were lining up daily to get their shots – or to get swabs shoved up their noses. Fast forward to today. Following a wave of rapid innovation, the first Covid-19 breathalyzer test will soon make its way into medical offices and mobile testing sites.

Here’s what else you need to know to Start Your Week Smart.

The weekend that was

• Officials in the southeastern port of Mariupol have rejected a Russian ultimatum demanding the surrender of Ukrainian forces in the city, the scene of a sustained and brutal siege. Russia responded by saying it would “eliminate all resistance.”

• Two people were fatally shot and at least nine others were injured by gunfire overnight during a large party in Pittsburgh’s East Allegheny neighborhood, officials said early this morning. Separately, one person has been arrested in connection with a mass shooting at a South Carolina mall Saturday that left 14 people hurt, police said yesterday.

• North Korea fired two projectiles into waters off the east of the Korean Peninsula yesterday, according to the South Korean military. It was the country’s 12th such test this year.

• Firefighters battling the deadly McBride Fire in southern New Mexico were able to get the flames 56% contained by last night, a massive jump from the 0% containment reported earlier in the day, authorities said.

• Twitter’s board of directors adopted a limited-term shareholder rights plan called a “poison pill” late last week that could make it harder for Elon Musk to acquire the company.

The week ahead

Tuesday

Primary season continues with elections in Connecticut, Minnesota, Vermont and Wisconsin, as well as a special general election for Minnesota’s 1st Congressional District.

Twitter’s former head of security, who filed an explosive whistleblower disclosure in July, is scheduled to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee to discuss his allegations of serious security vulnerabilities at the social media company. September 13 is also the day that Twitter’s shareholders are set to vote on whether to approve Elon Musk’s $44 billion takeover deal – which Musk wants to terminate.

Alex Jones’ second defamation trial over the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School is expected to begin in Connecticut. The trial will determine how much Jones and his company will have to pay the families of the victims. Jones was previously found liable in a defamation lawsuit for calling the 2012 massacre a hoax. In August, a Texas jury awarded $45.2 million to the parents of one of the children killed in the shooting.

And the 77th session of the UN General Assembly kicks off in New York City with representatives from the 193 member states gathering in person after a two-year disruption due to Covid-19.

We’ll get the latest look at inflation with the Consumer Price Index for July. Inflation surged to a new pandemic-era peak in June, with consumer prices jumping by 9.1% year-over-year to the highest level in more than 40 years.

Thursday

Thursday is Queen Elizabeth’s 96th birthday. The Queen has been taking a step back from public appearances and events due to feeling “very tired and exhausted” following her recent bout of Covid-19, a royal source said. A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex confirmed to CNN that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle visited the Queen last week, on their way to The Hague to attend The Invictus Games, which began yesterday.

It’s also the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month.
