Subject: Clinton Convinces Bowles To Stay Through State of the Union

President Bill Clinton has persuaded White House Chief of Staff Erskine Bowles to stay on at least through the 1998 State of the Union address and is pressing his reluctant top aide to stay even longer.

As CNN reported last week, Clinton used a golf outing with Bowles to urge his chief of staff to delay plans to resign and return to his North Carolina business interests.

Sources tell CNN that Bowles pledged to state through early next year, at least through the State of the Union address and the drafting of the administration's fiscal 1999 budget proposal. And these sources say Clinton hopes to persuade Bowles to stay on even longer, though they describe Bowles as adamant that his departure will come by next spring.
