A Look Ahead

Count Down To 2000

With recent visits by Dan Quayle and Elizabeth Dole to Iowa, it already looks like there could be a lively race in 2000 for the GOP presidential nomination. But the man who made the most news during early November was retired Gen. Colin Powell, who said he doesn't plan to run for any political office in 2000, including the presidency.

In the meantime, Washington pols are turning their attention to the '98 midterms, when Democrats will try to stave off the traditional erosion that occurs halfway through an incumbent president's second term, and Republicans will look to further strengthen their hold on the House and Senate.
