California advances its presidential primary

California

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AllPolitics, September 28) -- Gov. Pete Wilson signed a bill Monday bumping up the date of California's primary election from June to March, giving the state greater clout in determining who the political parties will nominate as their presidential candidates.

The bill moves the date of all California primary elections to the first Tuesday in March, according to Andrea Brown, a spokeswoman for Wilson. The primary was previously held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in June.

California's next presidential primary will be March 7, 2000. The move probably will force presidential hopefuls to spend more time in California early in the primary season, and also spend heavily on TV ads in the state's expensive media markets.
