Poll: Americans remain opposed to impeachment

December 18, 1998
Web posted at: 5:50 p.m. EST (2250 GMT)

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, December 18) -- The majority of the American public remains opposed to the impeachment of President Bill Clinton and continues to be confident in the president's ability to govern, according to the latest CNN/TIME poll.

The survey found that 59 percent of Americans are against impeachment while 69 percent say the impeachment process has not caused them to lose confidence in Clinton's ability to govern. But 51 percent said the investigation has diminished the president's effectiveness.

When asked if the House of Representatives should postpone the debate on impeachment until the U.S. bombing in Iraq ends, the public was evenly split with 46 percent favoring postponement and 47 percent opposed.

Those polled were also split on the question of confidence in the GOP's ability to govern. Forty-nine percent said they had not lost confidence in the majority's ability to govern while 44 percent said they had lost confidence.

An overwhelming majority, 67 percent, felt Republican leaders questioning of Clinton's motives for the Iraqi bombing was inappropriate.

The survey of 535 adult Americans was conducted Thursday, December 17 and has a margin of sampling error of four percentage points.
