(CNN) -- It's the biggest movie of the summer, a $135 million extravaganza of special effects, explosions and the sheer horror of war. But "Pearl Harbor," notes star Ben Affleck, is also a movie about people -- a story of love and a story of courage.
He hopes audiences realize that war isn't just about opposing armies and ammunition.
"It's important to know how terrible a thing war is ... and how real the sacrifices were (that were) made by that generation," he told CNN at an interview in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, not far from the USS Arizona Memorial, a gravesite where 1,177 men lost their lives in the December 7, 1941, surprise attack.
Affleck co-stars in "Pearl Harbor" with Kate Beckinsale, Josh Hartnett and Cuba Gooding Jr. He plays a pilot determined to fly -- so determined that he leaves the American military to join the British air corps. Meanwhile, he and Hartnett's characters get involved in a love triangle with Beckinsale's character.

Disney, the movie's studio, spared no expense at the premiere Monday night. It spent $5 million to stage the opening aboard a navy aircraft character.
Affleck sat down with CNN Showbiz Today Reports correspondent Paul Vercammen over the weekend in Hawaii to tell us why he was so passionate about this project.
