    STATE TIDBITS

    State Capital: Austin
State Nickname: The Lone Star State

Politically, Texas is now indisputably a Republican state. Gov. George W. Bush, son of former President George Bush, defeated Gov. Ann Richards (D) in 1994. Nearly half of Texas' votes are cast in the two large metro areas of Dallas and Fort Worth. The outlook for Texas Democrats is quite bleak, as Republicans are very much in the majority on the major issues, which continue to reflect traditions of cultural conservatism and minimalist government. Bush has a huge support base in Texas, but he would surprise few if in 1999 he announced a run for the presidency. His style is one of setting out his positions in a soothing manner and then lambasting what he regards as the failed liberal culture of his own generation. Political analysts fear that if Bush, who holds a commanding lead in his 1998 re-election bid, has political coattails, Democrats could lose every statewide office on the ballot this year, according to the Washington Post. Republicans are hoping for a sweep in November, which would also put them in great standing for redistricting, slated to happen after the 2000 census. A Republican sweep would also have a great impact on the casting of Texas' 32 electoral votes in the presidential race in 2000. Texas ranks third, after California's 54 electoral votes and New York's 33 votes.
