Joe Lieberman was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1988. In 2000, Democratic presidential nominee Al Gore tapped him as his vice presidential pick. After Gore declined to run in 2004, Lieberman entered the race but dropped out February 3 after failing to win a single race.
