Kenya Airways Plane Crashes Over Atlantic

Aired January 30, 2000 - 6:10 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

ANDRIA HALL, CNN ANCHOR: Back to our top story for you, that is the breaking news of the fact that there are reports now that an airbus, a Kenyan Airways airbus has crashed into the Atlantic Ocean.

We want to get more now for you, more facts, specifically, from Alphonso Van Marsh. He is CNN's Nairobi bureau chief, and he joins us on the telephone now.

Alphonso, what can you tell us about this?

ALPHONSO VAN MARSH, CNN NAIROBI BUREAU CHIEF: Hi, Andria.

We are able to confirm from officials at KLM -- that's the partner airline with Kenya Airways -- that flight 1131 from Abidjan, Ivory Coast, to Lagos, Nigeria, has indeed crashed into the sea.

We know at this point that there are 169 passengers registered on board and 10 crew members, including two KLM employees.

The details of the crash are very, very undefinite at this point. Officials are telling us that the crash did occur at the very early stages of the flight. And, of course, we're working on getting you more details -- Andria.

HALL: Alphonso, that flight, is it true that it was headed toward Nigeria?

VAN MARSH: Yes, yes. It's a flight that goes three times a week from Abidjan in the Ivory Coast to Lagos, Nigeria. Yes, it was on its way to Lagos.

HALL: And we will get more information from Alphonso Van Marsh, CNN's Nairobi bureau chief after this break.
