Twenty-One Killed in Pennsylvania Plane Crash

Aired May 21, 2000 - 2:30 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

GENE RANDALL, CNN ANCHOR: I'm Gene Randall in Washington.

We want to tell you what happened today in Pennsylvania, in Lucerne County, about 11 miles from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Pennsylvania Airport. A twin-engine plane went down, apparently on its second instrument-landing approach attempt. It was a BA-31 aircraft that went down. It disappeared from radar about 11 miles from the airport.

Nineteen passengers and a crew of two aboard, we're told there were no survivors. Once again, 11 miles from the Wilkes- Barre/Scranton, Pennsylvania Airport.

Chad Myers is at the weather center in Atlanta. He can give us a fill on the weather in the area at that moment -- Chad.

CHAD MYERS, CNN METEOROLOGIST: Gene, in fact I've flown into the airport, Avoca Airport, and it's a very hilly terrain. It's the Susquehanna Valley, very large mountains on each side of the airport, and the entire valley there, up and down the airport, from Scranton down to Wilkes-Barre and Plymouth and Tunkhannock, very low-lying areas.

But the conditions exactly at 11:15, with a broken deck at 500 feet, an overcast sky at 1,500 feet, visibility at 1 3/4 miles with light rain and fog.

The only problem with the forecast there was that the winds were completely calm, so fog was kind of moving in and out of the field. And that's what the pilot there experienced as he was flying into Wilkes-Barre/Scranton at 11:15.

Back to you, Gene.

RANDALL: Thanks, Chad.

Once again, the exact site of the crash, Bear Creek Township, just off the Pennsylvania Turnpike. The death toll apparently 21, 19 passengers and a crew of two.

I'm Gene Randall in Washington. Now back to CNN WORLD REPORT.
