Three Confirmed Deaths in Aircraft Collision over Boca Raton

Aired June 23, 2000 - 1:20 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: There's been a midair plane crash over Boca Raton, Florida. The FAA is telling us a Lear 55 jet crashed on the grounds of an apartment complex about 2 1/2 miles west of the Boca Raton airport where we understand from the sheriff's office the plane took off for Fort Pierce with two crew and one observer onboard.

We have confirmation from the sheriff's department, Natalie just talking with the spokesman there, of three fatalities. One of the fatalities, a person who was wearing a parachute.

Now we also understand there was a second plane involved here. We don't know much about that. It was a smaller craft. We understand the sheriff's department telling us the wreckage from the smaller craft has been found.

The debris around the apartment complex set off some fires, but those fires were contained, and as of this time, the sheriff's department tells us they are unaware of any injuries on the ground.

The latest is three confirmed dead, two planes crashed: one a Lear 55 charter jet and one a smaller plane.

We'll keep pace with the story. We'll let you know more as soon as we know more.
