Santa Monica Hostage Standoff Continues

Aired July 4, 2000 - 7:38 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: You are looking at live pictures, courtesy of our affiliate KCBS in Los Angeles, of the entrance to the Santa Monica Pier, where a hostage situation is still under way. The incident started about three hours ago when a triple homicide suspect was being taken into custody on the pier.

And police tell CNN a man with the suspect ran from them and then opened fire as the officers chased him. Police say, the man shot three officers and a civilian before taking an unknown number of hostages at an arcade which was open at the time, at about 1:40 a.m. in Los Angeles.

None of the shooting wounds appear to be life-threatening. A hostage negotiator is now talking with the man. They have yet to report -- the police there have yet to report what it is that he wants.
