London-Leeds Train Derails, Killing Four

Aired October 17, 2000 - 9:35 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Want to get back to the breaking story that's taking place out of London, a train derailment as we understand. At least six people have been killed.

Let's bring in our Amanda Kibel who has the latest -- Amanda.

AMANDA KIBEL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Daryn, yes, in fact, we only have confirmation at the stage that four people have died in this accident. We did hear that there were six people dead, but those figures are, at this stage, unconfirmed. We are told there are at least 80 walking wounded as a result of this derailment. A significant number of people are described as seriously wounded. A local hospital in the area, says that five people have been -- that eight people have been admitted and two of those are considered to be seriously wounded. The injured have arrived at the local hospital, as I said, and they will continue to update us as they know more.

As far as we understand, the high-speed train traveling between London, King's Cross and Leeds, which is north of the country, is said to have derailed shortly after noon, local time. The train, we understand, skidded on gravel. Two of its carriages are known to have left the tracks between a place called Welham Green and Hertfordshire. This is about 30 kilometers or 18 miles outside of London. Police are describing the crash site as a major incident. We understand at least two of the train's carriages are said to have left the track. The back carriage, the buffet carriage is understood to be -- to have overturned.

The train is run by a local company here, known as Great -- excuse me a second -- Great Northwestern Railway Company. This service, a high-speed service, as I said, between London and Leeds, left London at 12:10, local time, bound for Leeds in the north. A busy service running every day. A service capable of reaching speeds of up to about 120 miles or 193 kilometers per hour. It's a main line service and it will have been at this time of the day a fairly busy service.

At the stage, as we say, we have no indication of the exact nature of injuries and certainly no further indication of if there have been any more fatalities. But, of course, we will keep you updated on this as we hear more -- Daryn.

KAGAN: We do appreciate that. That is our Amanda Kibel in our London bureau. We will keep our eyes on that story out of London. TO ORDER A VIDEO OF THIS TRANSCRIPT, PLEASE CALL 800-CNN-NEWS OR USE OUR SECURE ONLINE ORDER FORM LOCATED AT www.fdch.com
