3 Large Explosions in Israeli Coastal City of Netanya; 8 Reportedly Injured

Aired January 1, 2001 - 12:41 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

JEANNE MESERVE, CNN ANCHOR: I'm Jeanne Meserve in Washington. Explosions just moments ago in city of Netanya, a coastal city just north of Tel Aviv in Israel.

Joining us now is CNN's Jerusalem bureau chief Mike Hanna.

Mike, what do you know about what's happened?

MIKE HANNA, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Jeanne, details sketchy at this particular point. However, Israel Radio is reporting that eight people have been injured in the explosions in the coastal resort town of Netanya just north of Tel Aviv. According to an Army spokesman, it may have been a car bomb, he says.

Initial reports said that there were three explosion, one after each other, in the center of the town, on a main road that passes through the town, a road that would be heavily trafficked -- traveled at this particular time of the night with commuters returning home after a day of work.

Eyewitnesses quoted on Israel radio say that there's a huge plume of black smoke in the vicinity, a large amount of fire engines, and rescue services are in the vicinity. At this particular point, though, no exact confirmation as to the number of casualties. One report on Israel Television says that eight people are reported to have been injured, one of them seriously. But, at this stage, no reports of any fatalities in the bombing.

This is the second bombing in the past two weeks. Last week, an explosion aboard a bus in Tel Aviv left some 14 Israelis injured. Before that, there was a major explosion in November in the town of Hadera, where two people were killed. And early November, an explosion in Jerusalem, near the Mahane Yehuda market, in which two people were killed.

So, at this stage, though, we must stress we do not know the cause of the explosion. What we do know is that there was an explosion, or a number of explosions in the coastal town of Netanya. At this stage, media reports are saying that eight people have been injured, one of them seriously. No details of any fatalities in the explosion at this point -- Jeanne.

MESERVE: Mike Hanna, thank you. And stay with CNN for more on this developing story. I'm Jeanne Meserve in Washington.
