Train Derailment Victims Flown to Hospitals

Aired March 18, 2001 - 9:31 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: More now on our top story -- the Amtrak derailment near Corning, Iowa. The most seriously injured were flown by helicopter to St. Joseph's Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska in addition to a number of other hospitals. And we understand we just got some sound in from passengers who were not injured on that derailment. Let's listen.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: We were watching TV and all of a sudden, like, the lights started flickering and it just, like, started shaking and it just, like, tipped over. Like, we were in the one that tipped over, like, you know, that got the most, like, damaged or whatever.

And like, for a second, like, nobody could move because we didn't know what was going on. And the lady that worked there, she had hit her head on the wall. And so we didn't really know what to do because she couldn't really, like, you know, think of what to do because she said she was dizzy.

So then we had to like climb out. Like, we climbed down the stairs, which was really hard because it was turned sideways. And we went down the stairs and out the window. And we climbed up the hill and then just waited for everybody else.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: How are you feeling right now?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Cold and tired and scared.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: There was some of us that were on train today and we were celebrating St. Patty's Day. And we were having a few cocktails. And I got a number of different passengers from all over that were on the train. And I had checked today -- I'm over here at the fire station and everybody that signed ahead is still here. So the luck of the Irish was with us.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

PHILLIPS: Wow. Well, on the phone, from St. Joseph's Hospital is Chris Highers (ph). Chris, how many people can you tell us are at your hospital now?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I can confirm that we have three people currently. PHILLIPS: You have three people. Now, two of those, I understand, the 47-year old woman and her 13-year old daughter?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Correct.

PHILLIPS: Are they still in critical condition?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I have one listed as critical and one that has been listed as fair now.

PHILLIPS: OK. Is- - who's in fair condition?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: And I can't split them up yet.

PHILLIPS: OK. All right. Now, the one additional patient that was brought in, could you give us any information on that person?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Just that she's listed in serious condition currently.

PHILLIPS: OK. Do you expect any more people to be transported to your hospital?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I was just trying to find that exact thing out. Not currently.

PHILLIPS: OK. Not right now. Any additional information, Chris that you could tell us?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: No, we're getting close to having some additional information for you but we've probably got another hour to go.

PHILLIPS: All right. Well, we'll continue to check in. Chris Highers from St. Joseph's Hospital. Thank you, sir.
